Birbhum Mahavidyalaya was established in 1979 as an all-girls college and was known as  Birbhum Mahila Mahavidyalaya. In 1987, the college was transformed into a co-educational institute and then renamed Birbhum Mahavidyalaya. It is also accredited by NAAC and has been offered autonomous status by UGC. The college offers Honours and General Courses in English, Bengali, Geography, Sanskrit, Political Science, History, and Philosophy, and General Courses in Sociology and Education and B.Sc. General stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Admission to all the courses is based on merit.

Birbhum Mahavidyalaya offers B.A courses in Bengali, Political Science, English, History, Philosophy, and Geography. The fees of the courses are quite low, the course fee ranges from Rs 1390- 1815. 

The university offers various need and merit-based scholarships for its students.
