What Is GATE?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a national-level examination used for postgraduate and doctoral admissions and by some public-sector employers. It tests undergraduate-level knowledge across engineering, science, architecture, commerce, arts and humanities. IISc and the IITs conduct it jointly, with IIT Madras organising the 2027 examination.

GATE began on 26 February 1983 for postgraduate engineering admissions at the five IITs then participating and IISc Bangalore. Its present scope includes papers such as Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Robotics and Automation.

For MTech admission, the accepted GATE paper and qualifying degree depend on the programme. GATE eligibility is broader than a department's admission eligibility.

GATE 2027 Dates

The forenoon session is 9:30 AM-12:30 PM and the afternoon session is 2:30-5:30 PM. A candidate appears in the session assigned on the admit card, even when a paper is conducted in multiple sessions. Exam-city information is scheduled before the admit-card download.

What Has Changed in GATE 2027?

Preparing for Textile Engineering? TF is no longer a separate test paper. XE9 is one of the optional sections of XE, so the complete XE paper also includes General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and another optional section.

The total remains 30 papers: RA is added while TF moves into XE. The syllabi have also been revised. Old paper codes such as XH-C1 and XL-P still appear on earlier question papers; the current application uses XH1 and XL0 for those sections.

GATE 2027 Eligibility

GATE is open to students in the eligible stage of an approved degree and to graduates. There is no age limit or cap on attempts.

Candidates with a qualifying degree from outside India must be in the third or later year of, or have completed, a bachelor's degree of at least three years in the listed fields. A higher qualification than the listed route is also accepted. Professional-society qualifications need the required MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC equivalence; recognition conditions include the professional-body enrolment provisions up to 31 May 2013.

A third-year BA student may therefore be eligible for GATE, but admission to an engineering master's still depends on that programme's degree requirements. Choose the paper with your intended programme in mind, not only the paper you are allowed to sit.

GATE Application and Fees

Indian applicants register through DigiLocker, provide a live facial image, enter degree details, choose papers and six cities in one zone, upload the applicable files and pay through GOAPS. Unverified DigiLocker accounts are permitted, with possible requests for additional documents during scrutiny.

For two papers, the regular fees are INR 2,000 and INR 4,000 for these two groups. The late-fee total is inconsistent across the official sources: the application-fee webpage lists INR 2,500 and INR 4,500, while the brochure says twice the single-paper fee, which comes to INR 3,000 and INR 5,000. The payable amount appears in GOAPS before payment; an applicant whose amount differs can contact the GATE helpdesk at 044-22578200.

A recent photograph must be a 5-600 KB JPG/JPEG, while the signature must be 3-300 KB. SC/ST certificates use CATEGORY.pdf in the GATE2027 DigiLocker folder; UDID and PwD certificates use UDID_CERT.pdf and PWD_CERT.pdf. OBC-NCL/EWS certificate uploads and academic marksheets are not required in that folder.

After payment, keep the same DigiLocker account. GOAPS first confirms payment, then scrutinises the application and accepts it or asks for defect correction. The rectification period is 14-21 October 2026.

GATE 2027 Papers and Subject Choices

Taking two papers means choosing an approved combination, not any two subjects. CS can be paired with DA, EC, GE, MA, ME, PH, RA or ST. RA can be paired with CS, DA, EC, EE, IN or ME. The secondary paper is included in the same application.

When Are Optional Sections Selected?

XH options are Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. XL options are Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and Food Technology, alongside compulsory Chemistry. XE options range from Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics to Energy Science and Textile Engineering.

GATE Exam Pattern and Marking

MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Questions

MCQs have one correct option. MSQs can have more than one correct option and require the complete correct selection for credit. NAT questions use a numerical answer entered through the virtual keypad. No marks are deducted for an unanswered question.

For example, eight correct and three wrong 1-mark MCQs give 8 - (3 x 1/3) = 7 marks. Two correct 2-mark NAT questions add 4 marks, while an incorrect NAT answer adds zero. This example gives raw marks, not a GATE score or rank.

The examination provides an on-screen scientific calculator and a scribble pad. Personal calculators are not permitted. Approved compensatory time is one hour for the three-hour paper; it must be requested through the application process with the applicable documents.

Syllabus and Preparation for GATE 2027

Every paper includes 15 marks of General Aptitude. The remaining 85 marks follow its subject syllabus. Most engineering papers allocate 13 of these marks to Engineering Mathematics; XE instead has a 15-mark Mathematics section. XH, XL, RA, AR, GE and GG have their own structures.

Start with the 2027 syllabus for your exact paper and, where relevant, your optional sections. Then use GATE 2026 question papers for timed practice. Classify missed questions by the concept tested and the error: an incorrect method, a calculation mistake, an incomplete MSQ selection or time spent without a solution.

• For MCQs, score practice attempts with the 1/3 and 2/3 deductions rather than counting correct answers alone.
• For MSQs, test every option; choosing only part of the correct set earns no partial credit.
• For NATs, enter the answer in the requested unit and precision and practise with the on-screen calculator.
• For XE and XL, practise the entire selected combination, including their compulsory sections. A strong optional subject does not replace the common section.

The previous-year question-paper collection includes older codes and earlier syllabus versions. Match questions to the revised syllabus; a chapter's marks in one past paper are not a fixed 2027 weightage.

Admit Card, Answer Key and Result

The admit card is downloaded from GOAPS. Carry an A4 print, preferably in colour, and the original photo ID used in the application. The card contains the assigned centre and session; requests to change these after allotment are not accepted.

After the exam, GOAPS makes candidate responses available and IIT Madras publishes answer keys. Candidates can challenge a key within the notified period and pay the applicable challenge fee. The result follows on 19 March 2027. Response-sheet, answer-key, challenge and scorecard-download dates have not been announced.

For a paper conducted in multiple sessions, raw marks are normalised before the GATE score is calculated. Single-session papers use actual marks. The scorecard is valid for three years from the result date; downloading it and using a valid score for admission have different timelines.

Qualifying Marks, Score and Admission Cutoff

There is no single passing percentage for all papers. The General-category qualifying mark is calculated as max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation)) for the paper. The OBC-NCL/EWS threshold is 90% of the General threshold, and the SC/ST/PwD threshold is two-thirds.

These are 2026 qualifying marks out of 100, not 2027 cutoffs or institute admission scores. A programme's admission cutoff is separate and depends on its accepted paper, category and selection process.

The GATE score uses the paper's qualifying mark and the mean performance of its top candidates. It is not raw marks multiplied by ten. Category qualifying ratios describe exam qualification, not the percentage of admission seats reserved for each category.

Admission, COAP, CCMT and Financial Assistance

After receiving a GATE score, candidates apply to the institutions or admission platforms relevant to their programme. Admission may use the score alone or combine it with a test, interview and academic record.

These COAP and CCMT processes describe the 2026 admission routes; the 2027 round dates and participating lists are not yet available.

The GATE opportunities page lists MTech financial assistance of INR 12,400 per month, generally for 22 months. Assistance is tied to admission and the institute's eligibility and funding rules. Seat reservation likewise follows the admitting institution and government rules, rather than a GATE-wide seat-quota table.

Employers such as NTPC, ONGC, IOCL and POWERGRID have used GATE scores in past recruitment. That history is not a list of confirmed 2027 vacancies; each employer issues its own recruitment notice.

How Many Students Appear for GATE?

These are paper-wise counts from the completed 2026 examination. An applicant may take two papers, so adding the rows would not give a count of unique people. Attendance numbers also do not establish a pass percentage. GATE 2027 participation and toppers will be known after the examination and result.
