IISc Bangalore will release the latest GATE 2026 ECE exam pattern on the official site. The GATE Electronics and Communication paper pattern involves 8 major sections i.e. Engineering Mathematics, Signals and Systems, Networks, Electronic Devices, Digital Circuits, Analog Circuits, Control Systems, Communications, and Electromagnetics. 

  • According to the GATE exam pattern 2026, there will be three types of questions which consist of Multiple- Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. 
  • The GATE ECE exam will be a total of 100 questions.
  • The paper code for the subject Electronics and Communications is EC and the distribution of marks for each section is as follows:
  1. General Aptitude – 15 % of the total marks
  2. Engineering Mathematics – 15 % of the total marks
  3. Electronics and Communication Engineering (Subject Questions)- 70% of the total marks

GATE ECE Exam Pattern 2026: Highlights

For the GATE 2026 Exam candidates should know the marking scheme, weightage, exam pattern, and the number of questions coming in the exam. The details for these are listed below:

  • The tentative exam dates for the GATE 2026 exam are 3, 4, 10, and 11, February 2026.
  • The question paper for electronics and communications will be of total 100 marks.
  • The GATE 2026 exam will be conducted online mode. It will be a computer-based test (CBT).
  • The questions in the exam will be one mark and two marks.
  • The question paper will consist of a total of 65 questions. From this 10 questions will be on general aptitude and 55 questions on electronics and communication engineering.
  • The duration of the exam will be of 3 hours (180 minutes) in total.
  • One or two marks are given according to the assigned marks for each correct answer.
  • There will be negative markings for only objective-type questions. For every incorrect answer, 1/3 rd and 2/3 rd marks will be deducted.
  • Candidates who are appearing for GATE 2026 Electronics and Communications have to choose between PH, IN, EE, CS, or GE for their second paper.
  • Candidates should keep all these points in mind while preparing for the exam.

Types of Questions in GATE ECE 2026

The first two sections in the GATE Exam involves both multiple choice questions as well as numerical answer type questions. It is a computer-based examination. Therefore, candidates who are appearing for the exam can use the mouse and virtual keyboard to answer the questions. The candidate is expected to answer the types of questions which are given below:

  • Comprehension: Questions in the comprehension section are usually given to examine the candidate’s understanding of the electronics and communication engineering discipline. Candidates are expected to drive simple conclusions from fundamental principles and ideas.
  • Recall: Questions in this section are based on known facts, principles, proven laws and formulae of the Electronics and Communication Engineering discipline. Candidates can answer the question by recollecting the content from his/her memory or from a single-line computation.
  • Application: The application section tests the application skills of the candidates. Candidates are expected to make use of their knowledge either through logical reasoning or by computation.
  • Common Data Questions: This section involves a set of multiple questions which are linked to a common data problem or a comprehension passage. Two or three questions are formed on the basis of the given input data. Each question in this section is different than the others and answers can be derived separately. Common Data Questions carry two marks each.
  • Analysis and Synthesis: Questions in the Analysis and Synthesis section are given in a linked format which means the answer to the 1st question of the pair is mandatory to solve its successor or next question in the sequence.
  • Linked Answer Questions: This section consists the questions that are of problem-solving type. Candidates are provided with a problem statement followed by the 2 questions that they have to answer. These two questions are interlinked which means that the second question depends on the answer to the first question. Each question carries two marks in this section.

Scope after GATE 2026 EC Paper

The number of students answering GATE in Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) is growing rapidly every year. This is because the Master's courses now require a GATE score and all of the PSUs also employ through GATE. 

Job opportunities in top PSUs

  • Nearly 100 PSUs working in the country such as IOCL, ONGC, HPCL, NHAI, DMRC, BHEL, SAIL, and NTPC, consider the GATE score as an important criterion for electronics and communication engineer recruitment. 
  • A career at a good PSU means you will keep in touch with recent advances in engineering and work on exciting country development projects, along with having benefits of the security provided by government jobs. 

Study M.Tech after GATE 2026

  • One of the most common ways to proceed is to apply for M.Tech at the IITs, IISc, and NITs after the GATE test has been cleared. This can be an important step for students who have dreamt of studying at top institutes like IITs and NITs in the country. 
  • During the two years of your Master's program, you will also be eligible for the MHRD stipend, provided you have a strong GATE score. 
  • Also, if you apply to other states, regional or private colleges that do not have GATE scores as their primary selection criteria, having a good GATE score would still give you an advantage over the other candidates. 
  • Upon completing M.Tech, you can apply to private jobs with good packages in the electronics and communication domain. 

GATE 2026 EC: Important Instructions

  1. GATE Admit Card must be brought with at least one original and legitimate proof of photo identification (Aadhar Card, Passport, College ID, PAN Card, Driver's License, Voter ID, or Employer ID) to the examination center. 
  2. GATE Admit Card will only be considered legitimate if there is a clearly visible signature and a photograph of the applicant. 
  3. Candidates are expected to report to the exam venue 60 minutes before the scheduled examination time. 
  4. Candidates will only be permitted to take the exam if their qualifications are verified by the exam center's officials. 
  5. Candidates are allowed to take their allotted seats 35 minutes before the scheduled exam time.
  6. Candidates will be permitted to start reading the test instructions 20 minutes before the scheduled exam time. 
  7. After 09:30 AM for the morning session and after 02:30 PM for the afternoon session, no applicant will be permitted to enter the examination center. 
  8. Candidates are not permitted to leave the exam hall until the test finishes. 
  9. There will be a virtual scientific calculator for the exam on the computer screen. 
  10. There will be scribble pads available for the rough work. Before starting any rough work, candidates will need to write their names and registration numbers on the pads. After the test, these pads must be returned to the invigilator.
  11. GATE does not allow cell phones, personal calculators, or other electronic devices into the allotted exam hall. 
  12. There is no need to carry documents, charts, or tables into the exam hall.

GATE EC 2026 Cutoff

The candidates can view the GATE Cutoff for ECE for the year 2026 on their official website. To take admission for M.Tech in the IITs, NITs and centrally funded institutes, and private institutes, the candidates have to qualify for the GATE Score. The candidates can take a look and analyse the exam pattern of GATE for ECE and can solve previous years question papers. Following are the cut-off of GATE ECE from previous years:
