Choose GATE books by subject and purpose, not by the number of books in a package. The selected references below cover CSE, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics and mathematics topics, with authors and specific uses. They are not an official prescribed list.
A reference book explains the subject; a GATE module narrows that subject to an examination syllabus; a solved-paper collection provides dated practice. These are different jobs. For a weak topic such as process synchronisation, use the relevant textbook chapter, then solve questions from that unit instead of reading an entire operating-systems book from cover to cover.
The titles below are selected subject references, not an IIT Madras recommended-book list or a ranking. Match them to the GATE 2027 syllabus before buying. A guide carrying a recent year can still include material meant for another examination.
| Subject | Book and authors | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Operating System Concepts - Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin and Greg Gagne | Processes, scheduling, synchronisation, memory and file systems |
| Databases | Database System Concepts - Abraham Silberschatz, Henry F. Korth and S. Sudarshan | Relational model, SQL, normalisation, indexing and transactions |
| Computer networks | Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach - James F. Kurose and Keith W. Ross | Application, transport, network and link layers |
| Digital logic | Digital Design - M. Morris Mano and Michael D. Ciletti | Combinational/sequential circuits and digital representation |
For programming, algorithms, theory of computation and compiler design, keep the current CSE topic list beside your chosen course material. The four references above do not form a complete CS book set. The 2027 MADE EASY CS checklist below provides one example of a full technical-module inventory.
| Subject | Book and authors | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Thermodynamics | Engineering Thermodynamics - P. K. Nag and Sudipta De | First/second laws, entropy, properties and cycles |
| Mechanics of materials | Mechanics of Materials - Beer, Johnston, DeWolf, Mazurek and Sanghi | Axial loading, torsion, bending, stresses, deflection and columns |
| Fluid mechanics | Fluid Mechanics - Frank M. White and Henry Xue | Fluid properties, conservation equations and flow analysis |
| Geotechnical engineering | Geotechnical Engineering: Principles and Practices - Richard L. Handy and Merlin G. Spangler | Soil behaviour, seepage, settlement and foundations |
Mechanical students need additional coverage for design, manufacturing, industrial engineering and the remaining thermal units. Civil students also need structures, transportation, environmental engineering, water resources and geomatics. Use the Mechanical syllabus or Civil syllabus to identify those gaps; a four-book list cannot cover either paper by itself.
| Subject | Book and authors | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit analysis | Fundamentals of Electric Circuits - Charles K. Alexander and Matthew N. O. Sadiku | DC/AC circuits, network methods, transforms and two-port networks |
| Control systems | Modern Control Engineering - Katsuhiko Ogata | System models, response, stability and control design |
| Digital circuits | Digital Design - M. Morris Mano and Michael D. Ciletti | Logic minimisation, combinational and sequential circuits |
Circuit and control references overlap across EE and EC, but the complete papers do not. Electrical machines and power systems are central to EE; devices, analogue circuits and communication systems require separate EC coverage. The EE syllabus and EC syllabus keep that distinction clear.
| Area | Book and authors | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics | Advanced Engineering Mathematics - Erwin Kreyszig | Select the linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, probability and numerical-method chapters that match your paper |
| DA mathematical foundations | Mathematics for Machine Learning - Marc Peter Deisenroth, A. Aldo Faisal and Cheng Soon Ong | Linear algebra, vector calculus, probability and optimisation; not the complete DA syllabus |
Mathematics for Machine Learning has an author-provided online edition. It is useful for the mathematical foundations of DA, but does not replace preparation in Python, data structures, databases or artificial intelligence. Advanced Engineering Mathematics is broader than most GATE mathematics sections, so select by the listed units.
The provider lists ten technical theory books, three workbooks and four additional books covering General English, Engineering Mathematics, Reasoning/Aptitude and previous-year questions: 17 books in total. This is an inventory of that product, not proof that buying 17 books improves a score.
The combined Civil package lists 31 books. Eight are general-studies volumes, including history, polity, geography, economy and current affairs. Those state-service subjects are not automatically part of GATE Civil. Compare the technical modules with the actual GATE units rather than treating the package size as a syllabus requirement.
Use GATE previous-year papers with the matching paper code, session and final key. A solution book is useful when it explains the steps, not only the correct option. For General Aptitude, include verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial topics; a mathematics text alone does not cover all four.
An older standard textbook can remain useful for an unchanged concept. An older exam guide needs a stricter check for current syllabus, optional sections, question types and answer keys. In 2027, Textile Engineering is XE9 within Engineering Sciences, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence is a new paper. A standalone old TF mock is not a complete current XE mock.
After topic practice, use a full three-hour paper through the GATE mock-test guide. A chapter score measures that chapter; it does not predict an All India Rank.
Not for every unchanged concept. Compare the contents with the 2027 syllabus and check whether exercises or notation used in your course depend on an edition. A new cover year matters more for an exam guide with current syllabus and paper solutions than for a basic theorem in a standard text. For a second-hand copy, check that the index includes your required units and that the exercise solutions you plan to use match its question numbering.
A single complete exam guide may organise the syllabus, but it rarely replaces detailed explanations for every weak subject. Use targeted references where needed. Operating systems, databases and networks references do not cover algorithms, compiler design and theory of computation by themselves.
No. A combined package can include general studies or other-exam topics. For example, the listed Civil GATE/State Services set includes history, polity and current-affairs books. Buy against the GATE syllabus, not the total package count.
No. It supports the mathematics behind machine learning but is not a full DA preparation course. Programming, data structures, databases, artificial intelligence and the rest of the listed syllabus need separate preparation.
No. The official syllabus defines the topic scope. This is a selected reference list based on publisher titles and subject coverage, not an organiser endorsement.
