What Is NEET SS?

NEET SS stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Super Specialty. NBEMS conducts it for admission to participating Doctorate of Medicine (DM), Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) and DrNB super-specialty programmes after the required postgraduate medical qualification. It is an eligibility-cum-ranking examination; seats are allotted through a separate counselling process.

NEET-SS became the common entrance route for covered super-specialty admissions from 2017. It includes participating private and deemed institutions and the relevant Armed Forces Medical Services route. Direct six-year DrNB courses are excluded.

The DM/MCh admission routes at AIIMS New Delhi and other AIIMS, PGIMER Chandigarh, JIPMER Puducherry, NIMHANS Bengaluru and SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram are outside this centralised NEET-SS route. An institution offering a DM or MCh degree is therefore not automatically a NEET-SS participating institution.

NEET SS 2026 Dates

The qualification cutoff falls after the proposed exam dates. It concerns completion of the prior-entry MD, MS, DNB or equivalent qualification; it is not an extension of the application window. The 2026 detailed bulletin has not been released. The eligibility, application and paper rules below refer to 2025.

Eligibility: Match the Qualification, Course and Paper

In the 2025 route, candidates needed a recognized MD, MS, DNB or equivalent qualification in an accepted feeder specialty. Candidates due to complete it by the notified cutoff could apply. An MBBS qualification alone did not make a candidate eligible for this post-PG super-specialty route.

Indian candidates needed NMC or State Medical Council registration. Foreign nationals, including OCI candidates, could appear without Indian registration under the separate foreign-national provision; temporary registration for the admitted course depended on the prescribed recognition and home-country registration conditions.

These selected examples show why the target course matters. Paediatrics is a feeder for Endocrinology, but that route used the Medical Group paper. General Surgery candidates seeking Head and Neck Surgery used ENT. Qualifying one paper does not open every course covered by that group.

The 2025 bulletin also excluded FCPS qualifications awarded by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mumbai, as the qualifying route. Candidates already admitted to DM, MCh or DrNB through NEET-SS were barred from another DrNB super-specialty admission for the prescribed duration of the existing course, even after resigning.

Registration, Fees and Corrections

The 2025 form required a candidate profile, academic and registration details, eligible paper-group choices, image uploads, test-city selection, payment and final submission. Applicants could select more than one eligible group, with a separate fee for each.

Gateway charges were additional. The form needed both a live photograph and a recent uploaded photograph, plus signature and left-thumb impression. The candidate name had to match the postgraduate qualification certificate.

The ordinary correction window kept name, nationality, mobile number, email address and test city locked. A later selective window addressed deficient images only. Successful fee payment and final submission were separate steps; a saved profile or pending payment was not a completed form.

NEET SS Subjects and Paper Groups

The 2025 scheme grouped courses into 15 papers. Thirteen used the primary feeder broad-specialty curriculum at PG exit level, covering its general/basic and sub-specialty components. Critical Care Medicine and Medical Oncology used dedicated super-specialty curricula.

This is a list of tested subjects, not a complete eligibility table. The broader course families include DM courses and MCh courses, but each course has its own acceptable feeder qualifications. The same degree can support more than one paper choice when those feeder rules permit it.

Exam Pattern and Marking

The 2025 computer-based exam had 150 MCQs, 150 minutes and 600 maximum marks. Sections A, B and C each contained 50 questions with an individual 50-minute timer. You could not advance early or revisit a section once it closed.

For 100 correct, 30 incorrect and 20 unattempted answers, the raw score was (100 x 4) - 30 = 370 out of 600. This is a marks calculation, not a percentile prediction. An answered question marked for review could still be evaluated, while an unanswered question earned zero.

How to Prepare for the Right Paper

Start from the paper your target course requires. For a primary-feeder group, revision should span the broad specialty's general component and its sub-specialty systems at PG exit level. Revising only the destination super-specialty is too narrow for that scheme. The dedicated Critical Care and Medical Oncology papers require a different subject plan.

Practise with three separate blocks of 50 questions and 50 minutes, closing each block before moving on. That reproduces the section lock; an unrestricted 150-minute test does not. Review wrong answers within their subject systems, then repeat the areas causing errors rather than assigning arbitrary chapter percentages.

NBEMS did not publish fixed chapter-wise weightages in the group scheme. Topic-frequency estimates are not an official chapter allocation.

Admit Card and Exam-Day Documents

The 2026 admit-card date has not been announced. In the 2025 process, candidates downloaded the admit card from NBEMS and carried a coloured printout. The card supplied the assigned centre and reporting details; it was not sent by post or email.

A photocopy of a government ID or an identity document displayed in DigiLocker was not accepted at the centre. Registration was a separate document requirement; carrying its photocopy did not replace the original photo ID. Late arrival beyond the reporting-counter deadline could prevent entry even if the candidate had reached the wider venue premises.

Result, Cutoffs and Counselling

NBEMS releases group-wise results and individual scorecards. The 2025 merit scheme used marks and tie-breakers without equating, scaling or normalization. The score was valid for that admission session only.

For the previous cycle, NEET-SS 2025 results were declared on 23 January 2026. The qualifying threshold was later reduced from the 50th to the 30th percentile on 22 September 2026. Revised cutoffs included 175/600 for Medical, 243/600 for Surgical and 254/600 for Critical Care Medicine. Ranks stayed unchanged and no new scorecards were issued.

MCC counselling is separate from the exam form. Qualified candidates register, pay the counselling charges, submit eligible course/institute choices and report after allotment. Course eligibility still depends on the feeder qualification, and a qualifying cutoff is not a promise of a seat.

Not joining an allotted seat could forfeit the security deposit. An institution's total tuition fee, service bond and course-specific seat availability are separate from these application and counselling payments.
