NEET SS Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Feeder Specialty and Rules

NEET SS 2026 is for doctors seeking admission to DM, MCh and DrNB super-specialty courses. The applicant must have the postgraduate medical qualification accepted for the course they want to join. NBEMS has not released the 2026 information bulletin yet, so the final qualifying-degree date and other rules are still awaited.
As per the 2025 NBEMS bulletin, applicants needed an MD, MS, DNB or another recognised qualification in the feeder specialty for the chosen course. They also needed registration with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council. These 2025 rules explain the usual eligibility check, but the 2026 bulletin will give the final rules.

NEET SS 2026 Qualification Requirement
The NEET SS application is linked to a postgraduate medical qualification. MBBS alone is not enough. As per the 2025 rules, a doctor could apply after completing the MD, MS, DNB or equivalent qualification accepted as a feeder for the intended DM, MCh or DrNB course.
Doctors who were due to complete their PG qualification by the date given in the bulletin could also apply. For the 2025 exam, this date was 31 January 2026. NBEMS has not yet announced the matching date for NEET SS 2026. A candidate who completes the degree after the new cutoff date will not qualify for that admission year unless NBEMS changes the rule.

How the Feeder Specialty Rule Works
A high NEET SS score does not make a doctor eligible for every super-specialty. Each course accepts one or more feeder PG specialties. The accepted feeder qualification and the question-paper group must both match the course.
The paper name may be different from the PG specialty. For example, the 2025 bulletin allowed both General Medicine and Paediatrics graduates to seek Endocrinology admission, but both had to take the Medical Group paper. Head and Neck Surgery accepted General Surgery and ENT as feeder specialties, while the entrance paper was the ENT Group paper.

Medical Registration Requirement
As per the 2025 bulletin, Indian applicants needed registration with the NMC or a State Medical Council. Proof of registration had to be shown at the test centre. The same document was also needed later during admission checks.
A pending registration application was not the same as holding valid registration. If NBEMS keeps this rule for 2026, the certificate or registration proof must be available by the stage stated in the new bulletin.

Who Was Not Eligible Under the 2025 Rules?
The 2025 bulletin did not allow a candidate to apply only on the basis of an FCPS qualification from CPS Mumbai, because NBEMS did not treat it as equivalent to MD or MS for NEET SS eligibility.
A doctor who had already joined or was pursuing a DM, MCh or DrNB course through NEET SS could not seek another DrNB super-specialty seat during the full length of that course. This restriction continued even if the earlier course was later left or discontinued.
Candidates were also ineligible for a course when their PG specialty was not included in its feeder list. An eligible exam application did not create an automatic right to admission. The college and counselling authorities still checked the qualification, registration, feeder specialty and original documents.
NEET SS Rule for Foreign Nationals
The 2025 bulletin allowed foreign nationals, including OCI cardholders treated under that category, to take NEET SS without NMC registration. For admission, the NMC could grant temporary registration for the course and the allotted institute.
This depended on two checks: the applicant had to be registered with the medical authority in their own country, and the postgraduate qualification had to be recognised there. Temporary registration was limited to the approved course and institution. The 2026 bulletin will confirm whether the same rule continues.
