GATE Mechanical Engineering is regarded as one of the most competitive papers. Every year, more than 1 lakh candidates opt for the mechanical engineering paper in GATE. First, candidates preparing for the GATE 2026 exam must keep in mind that there won’t be changes in the exam pattern and the question paper will follow the existing pattern.

  • The GATE Mechanical Engineering paper is divided into 3 sections and consists of a total of 65 questions. 
  • General Aptitude Section, Engineering Mathematics Section as well as core subjects are the 3 primary sections of the GATE ME paper.

  • GATE 2026 ME Paper will comprise the following type of questions – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MDQs), and Numerical Answer Type Questions (NATs);
  • The paper is classified into 3 parts General Aptitude Section. Engineering Mathematics Section and a Subject-specific part (core subject herein mechanical engineering);
  • Questions pertaining to General Aptitude (Language & Analytical Skills) and Engineering Mathematics, in addition to the main subject of the paper, will also be appearing in the exam;
  • There shall be no negative marking for any incorrect attempt in the MSQ and NAT questions;

GATE 2026 Mechanical Engineering Marking Scheme

  • As per the GATE 2026 Mechanical Engineering Exam Pattern (ME), the paper is of a total of 100 marks, comprising of 1 and 2marks questions;
