Students in the third year or above of an eligible undergraduate programme, and graduates of government-approved programmes, can appear for GATE 2027. The examination is open beyond engineering: science, commerce, arts, humanities, architecture and several professional degrees are included.

There is no age limit or limit on attempts. The study-year requirement depends on the qualification. For example, a third-year BCA student and a first-year MCA student can both meet the examination eligibility rule.

Who Can Apply for GATE 2027?

IIT Madras accepts candidates studying in the third or higher year of a government-approved undergraduate programme in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities. Candidates who have completed such a degree are also eligible. The detailed list includes medical, pharmacy and recognised professional-examination routes.

A candidate pursuing or holding a qualification higher than those listed can also appear. Eligibility to write GATE does not depend on being a final-year engineering student. Registration and payment are separate requirements covered in the GATE 2027 application process.

The stage refers to your current course, not simply the number of years since Class 12. A diploma holder admitted directly to the second year of BTech becomes eligible when studying in the third year of that degree. The diploma alone is not listed as a qualifying degree.

A 60% or 6.5 CGPA condition quoted for an MTech programme is not automatically a GATE application condition. Likewise, an employer may impose its own age limit even though GATE does not. Keep the examination, postgraduate admission and recruitment rules separate.

Diploma and Professional Qualifications

A three-year engineering or technology degree entered after BSc or an engineering/technology diploma is included. A lateral-entry student in the third year can apply; a student still in the second year does not meet that route's current-year requirement.

Professional-society examinations

The recognised-equivalence route requires completion of Section A or an equivalent stage. The official examples are the Institution of Engineers (India), Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Aeronautical Society of India, Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers including its Polymer and Environmental Group, Indian Institute of Metals, and Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Membership alone is not enough. The examination must have the relevant MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC recognition as a degree equivalent. The eligibility notice also retains the recognition condition for students enrolled with professional bodies and institutions recognised up to 31 May 2013. A qualification from one of these organisations should not be treated as automatically accepted without that recognition.

Degrees Obtained Outside India

Candidates studying outside India must be in the third year or above, or have completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities. A two-year foreign bachelor's degree does not satisfy this particular bachelor's route.

Degree eligibility and the registration identity process are separate. Indian-national registration uses DigiLocker; foreign-national applicants follow the relevant route on the application portal. The examination eligibility rule does not establish admission equivalence for every Indian institution.

Choosing a GATE Paper

You can take one paper or an approved two-paper combination. Your GATE paper need not be identical to the title of your undergraduate degree, but the programme you want may accept only particular papers and qualifying degrees.

For example, a student considering CS and DA should first compare the GATE 2027 paper-wise syllabus and then the papers accepted by the intended postgraduate programme. Permission to write DA is not a promise that a department accepting only CS will accept that score. Submit the second paper through the same application rather than creating another enrolment ID.

A third-year student can take GATE before graduating. Admission still depends on completing the qualifying degree within the admitting institution's timeline and meeting its conditions. Backlogs, degree equivalence and department-specific prerequisites therefore need to be considered at the admission stage rather than replaced with a blanket claim that a GATE score guarantees eligibility.

Degree and Paper Choice

Study Year and Qualifications

Can a third-year lateral-entry BTech student apply?+

Yes. The rule is based on being in the third year or above of the degree. Entering BTech in its second year after a diploma does not exclude you once you reach the eligible stage.

Can I apply in the first year of MCA?+

Yes. MSc, MA, MCA and equivalent master's students can apply from the first year. This is different from the third-year condition for an undergraduate degree.

Does a backlog automatically make me ineligible for GATE?+

Not automatically. GATE 2027 appearance eligibility is based on the qualifying programme and your current study year, rather than a universal no-backlog rule.

A third-year or higher undergraduate student who meets the listed degree route can apply while still studying.
A postgraduate admission can separately require completion of the qualifying degree, the specified marks/CGPA and submission of final results by its deadline.
A score obtained while studying does not waive an uncleared subject or extend an institution's degree-completion deadline.

Can I use a two-year foreign bachelor's degree for the overseas bachelor's route?+

That route requires a degree of at least three years. A two-year bachelor's degree alone does not meet it. If you hold a different or higher qualification, its eligibility must be considered separately rather than assuming that the two-year degree qualifies.
