The exam pattern of GATE Textile Engineering and Fibre Science will be released by IISc Bangalore. As of now, no new changes have been made to the GATE TF 2026 Exam Pattern. 

  • The GATE TF exam is divided into three sections i.e General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and Core Subject questions.
  • The weightage of the core subject syllabus is 72% while General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics account for 15% and 13% respectively. 
  • Some of the important topics included in the GATE Textile Engineering exam are Engineering Mathematics, Textile Fibers, Fabric manufacture, Structure, and Properties, Yarn manufacture, Yarn structure, and Properties, Textile Testing, and Chemical Processing.
  • The GATE TF exam will have three different types of questions including Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. 
  • The negative marking is provided only for MCQ questions. The duration of the GATE TF paper is 3 hours and the score is valid for the next 3 years.
  • Candidates who have chosen TF as their first paper may also sit for GATE XE as their second paper. 
  • Also, if you chose XE as your first paper, you can choose from AE/ CH/ ME/ MN/ MT/ PE/ PI/ TF for your second paper.

The GATE Textile Engineering Paper is divided into three sections namely:

  • General Aptitude
  • Engineering Mathematics

Types of Questions

According to the official GATE Textile Engineering Exam Pattern, the candidates have to answer all the questions. There are three types of questions:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): Each question will have four options, only one of which is correct.
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQs): MSQs will have four possible answers, which means that one or more than one of the options is correct.
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) - The answers to these questions are numerical values that must be entered using a virtual numeric keypad displayed on the monitor. There are no options for these questions.

GATE Textile Engineering Exam Pattern: Important Instructions

  • GATE 2026 Exam will be held via online mode(Computer Based Test)
  • The duration of the exam is 180 minutes.
  • It is recommended that the candidates arrive at the examination centre 60 minutes prior to the commencement of the exam.
  • Candidates will be allowed to sit for the examination only after getting their credentials verified at the centre.
  • Candidates sitting for the GMAT exam next year must take their assigned seats at least 30 minutes before the exam's scheduled start time. Candidates can log in and begin reading the necessary instructions 20 minutes before the exam begins.
  • At the test centre, candidates will be provided with scribble pads, which must be returned to the invigilator at the end of the examination.
  • No candidate will be permitted to enter the examination hall after 09:30 a.m. for the morning session, and 2:30 p.m. for the afternoon sessions.
  • They will also not be permitted to leave the examination hall before the exam is completed.
  • The scribe service is only available to PWD candidates who have difficulty writing the paper, including those who are slow in writing.
  • The additional/compensatory time is only available to candidates who have difficulty in writing.
  • Dyslexic candidates can also obtain scribes if they can show a certificate of dyslexia issued by competent authorities.
  • Candidates who are visually impaired will be given a magnified question paper.
