Ques. What is GATE marking scheme?
Ans. There are three types of questions asked in GATE - MSQs, MCQs and NATs.
As a number of papers such as Chemical Engineering (CE) or Mechanical Engineering (ME) in GATE receive a high number of registrations, it is not possible to accommodate everyone in a single shift. These papers are conducted in multiple sessions. As a result the difficulty level varies in each session. Care is taken to accommodate an equal number of candidates in each session.
To ensure fair marking and negate the variation in difficulty, GATE conducting body uses the process of normalisation to convert marks into scores. The normalised score is an attempt to bring all the test takers to an unbiased marking.
For instance:
If paper of shift 1 is difficult in comparison to paper of shift 2, then those appearing for shift 1 will be benefitted.
