GATE 2027 Photo and Signature Size

The photograph is a passport-size colour image, with a nominal size of 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm. For digital upload, follow the pixel, ratio and file-size limits together. The face should occupy 60-70% of the image; the signature should occupy 70-80% of its cropped image.

Photograph Requirements

Use a recent, clear colour photograph against a plain white background. Face the camera directly, with the forehead, eyes, nose and chin visible. There should be no other person or object in the background.

• Do not wear a cap, hat, sunglasses or coloured glasses.
• Ordinary spectacles for vision correction are allowed, but glare must not hide the eyes. Remove the spectacles for the photo if glare cannot be avoided.
• Religious head coverings are allowed only when the full facial features from chin to forehead and both sides of the face remain visible.
• Avoid shadows, blurred images, masks and photos taken while looking away.

Cropping a photograph changes its aspect ratio as well as the amount of face visible. Check the final saved file, not only the image before cropping. A non-compliant photograph can lead to application rejection without a fee refund.

Signature Requirements

Sign yourself in black or dark-blue ink and use a clear image of the handwritten signature. The cropped image should be wider than it is tall: height:width must be 1:R, with R between 2.75 and 3.75.

The signature must not be in all capital letters or initials only. A digital signature, a tiny unreadable signature, a dark background, additional writing or a signature outside the box is not acceptable. Keep the signature horizontal and within the image area.

A mismatch at the examination can lead to disqualification. Resizing the file should not reshape the handwriting; keep its proportions while changing image dimensions.

Live Photo Capture and DigiLocker Photo

Use a computer with a webcam or a phone with a front-facing camera of at least 5 MP for live capture. Sit in a well-lit area so the face is clear. This step is separate from uploading the prepared JPEG/JPG photograph.

The official FAQ permits an old or blurred Aadhaar/DigiLocker photo because the live and uploaded images are considered. That does not permit an unclear new upload or incorrect name and date-of-birth details.

How to Prepare and Upload the Images

1. Create a clear colour photograph and handwritten signature image.
2. Crop each to its required shape without cutting off the face or handwriting.
3. Resize within the pixel limits and preserve the image proportions.
4. Save in JPEG/JPG and check the final KB size. Renaming a PNG extension does not convert the file format.
5. Open the saved files at normal size and inspect the face, eyes, handwriting and background.
6. Upload each image in its correct application field and inspect the preview before submission.

Avoid repeatedly compressing a small image until the face or writing becomes blurred. If the original is unclear, take or scan a clearer image instead. The GATE 2027 application process covers the remaining registration and scrutiny stages.

Correcting Photo or Signature Defects

A wrong image can cause the application to be marked defective. The GATE zone may contact the applicant by email, SMS or phone with the correction request. Upload the right image within the deadline in that message.

If the photograph and photo ID have been exchanged, the official FAQ says the application is marked defective and the candidate gets a chance to correct the images within a deadline. Failure to correct can leave the application provisional or rejected. Do not create a second application to solve an image problem.

The general application-rectification period is 14-21 October 2026. After a defect is corrected, the application returns to scrutiny. The accepted status, rather than a successful upload alone, confirms completion of that review.
