4.1 Which side of the photo ID should I upload?
The photograph you upload now for registration is used in the Admit Card and Scorecard. The photo should have been clicked recently. It should be of good quality in JPEG/JPG. The background of your photo must be white and blank. Your face must cover 60 to 70% of the photograph.
| Aspect Ratio | 0.66 to 0.59 |
| Maximum Pixel Resolution | 530 x 690 pixels |
| Minimum Pixel Resolution | 200 x 260 pixels |
There are a few specifications to follow while taking the photo. You must look directly into the camera. The photo should have a frontal view and your forehead, eyes, nose, and chin must be visible. Nothing must cover your face including caps, hats, sunglasses, tinted glasses, and more. If you wear glasses regularly for vision correction, then you can wear normal spectacles as long as there is no glare.
There should not be any clothes or shadows covering your face. However, you can wear head coverings for religious reasons as long as your face is clear from the top of your forehead to the bottom of your chin.
Your signature at the exam hall must match the one you submitted. If not, you may be disqualified. If the scanned image of the signature does not follow the specifications and is not rectified, the application will be rejected.
The image should be of good quality in JPEG/JPG format. The signature should be in black or dark blue ink only. It should cover at least 70% to 80% of the image. Check more specifications here:

| Maximum Pixel Resolution | 580 × 180 pixels |
| Minimum Pixel Resolution | 250 × 80 pixels |
You must take an A4 size paper and draw a 2 cm x 7 cm box. Your signature should be inside the box. It should be in your running handwriting. The signature should not be in capital letters or typed out. The signature should be your full name and not only your initials.
Various online platforms offer free services for image resizing. You can simply upload the scanned image of the website, select the dimensions, and resize it. You also have the option to crop or compress the scanned image to fit the specification for GATE 2026. Some popular websites on the web browser are as follows:
Besides the photo and signature, you have to upload other necessary documents for GATE as well. These documents should be visible and readable. If you fail to do so, your application may be delayed or rejected. These include a scanned copy of your certificates in PDF format:
You have to upload a valid photo ID as your identity proof. The ID can be your Aadhaar card (preferable), Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, or Driving License. Make sure your name, date of birth, photo, and unique ID are on the card. Carry the same photo ID on the exam day to the exam center for verification.
You are required to submit your photo ID validated by the government. Your name, date of birth, and unique ID number must be visible. If the data is visible on both sides of the ID card, then you have to upload both sides of the photo ID.
Ques. I have not uploaded the signature as per the specifications, will my GATE registration be rejected?
Ans. Not immediately. Your application will be marked as “DEFECTIVE”. You will receive an intimation via email, SMS, or phone call. There will be a window to rectify the mistake by uploading the image following the correct specifications. If you do not complete the rectification within the deadline, your registration will be “PROVISIONAL” or “REJECTED”.
Ques. My Aadhaar card is very old. Can I use it for my GATE application?
Ans. We advise you to use a valid photo ID with a recent photo. This way the authorities can verify your identity during the GATE exam. They might mark your registration as “DOUBTFUL IDENTITY” if your facial features do not match your submitted photo.
Ques. Why are my GATE photo and signature rejected?
Ans. IIT Roorkee may reject your GATE registration if your photo, signature, or documents are uploaded without following the guidelines. You will be informed via registered email ID, SMS, or phone call. You must rectify the mistakes within the given deadline. If your application is rejected due to the defective photo and signature, your fee will not be refunded.
