Gate 2026 AR syllabus consists of two main sections including General Aptitude and Core subject. The subsections of GA include verbal ability and numerical ability and the core subject syllabus is divided into parts viz, part A, part B1, & part B2 and each part is divided into different sections. 

  • The total weightage of the general ability syllabus is 15 marks.
  • The weightage of the core subject syllabus is 85 marks which are divided into parts, Part A (60 marks), & part B (25) marks.
  • 5 questions of 1 mark & 5 questions of 2 marks will be asked from the GA section of the GATE 2026 syllabus.
  • Core subject consists of 25 questions of 1 mark each and 30 questions of 2 marks each.

GATE AR 2026 Syllabus

GATE AR 2026 syllabus includes two major parts: General Aptitude (GA) part and GATE Architecture & Planning Core part. The General Aptitude section consists of Verbal Ability and Numerical Ability. The Architecture & Planning section consists of 8 sections which cover the major portion of around 85% of the entire paper. The following table mentions the detailed syllabus or topics covered in all the sections of the GATE AR Examination:

  • Section 1: Architecture, Visual composition in 2D and 3D; Planning and Design Architectural – Graphics, Computer application in Architecture and Planning; Organization of space; Anthropometrics; Circulation- horizontal and vertical; Universal design; Building bye-laws; Space Standards; Codes and standards
  • Section 2: Estimation and Specification; Professional practice and ethics; Temporary structures for rehabilitation; Construction and Management – Project management techniques e.g. PERT, CPM etc.; Form and Structure
  • Section 3: Environmental Planning, Ecological principles; Environmental pollution- types, causes, controls, and abatement strategies; Sustainable development, goals, and strategies; Climate change and the built environment.
  • Section 4: Elements of the urban built environment – urban form, Concepts, and theories of urban design; Principles, tools, and techniques of urban design; Development controls– FAR, densities and building bye-laws Urban renewal conservation; Public spaces, character, spatial qualities and Sense of Place; historical public spaces and gardens; Landscape design; heritage conservation; Site planning.
  • Section 5: Planning process – Salient concepts, Concepts, and theories by trendsetting planners and designers; Urban sociology; Methods of non-spatial and spatial data; concepts of cities - Eco-City, Smart City; Development guidelines such as URDPFI;
  • Section 6: Affordable Housing; Residential densities; Housing – Housing typologies; Real estate valuation; Concepts, principles, and examples of neighborhood
  • Section 7: Building Safety and Security systems; Water supply and distribution system; Water harvesting systems; Principles, Planning, and Design of streamwater drainage system; Methods of solid waste management - collection, transportation, and disposal; Recycling and Reuse of solid waste; Design of roads, intersections, grade separators, and parking areas; Hierarchy of roads and level of service; Services and Infrastructure – Firefighting Systems.
Part B1 ( Architecture)
  • Section B1.1: World History of Architecture: Byzantine, Egyptian, Gothic, Renaissance, Greco-Roman classical period, Baroque-Rococo, etc.; International styles, Deconstruction in architecture, etc.; Influence of Modern art and Design in Architecture; Works of renowned national and international architects, Indian vernacular and traditional Architecture
  • Section B1.2: Principles of Modular Coordination; Construction planning and equipment; Principles of the strength of materials; Design of structural elements with different materials; Alternative building materials; Elastic and Limit State design; Building systems and prefabrication of building elements; Building material characteristics and applications; Principles of Prestressing
  • Section B1.3: Thermal, visual and acoustic comfort in built environments; Sustainable building strategies; Building Performance Simulation and Evaluation; Sanitary fittings and fixtures; Principles of internal and external drainage system; Natural and Mechanical ventilation in buildings; Principles of electrification of buildings; Building Services and Sustainability – Solar architecture;
Part B2 (Planning)
  • Section B2.1: Regional and Settlement Planning – Regional delineation; Various schemes and programs of central government; Types and hierarchy of plans; settlement hierarchy; SEZ, SRZ, etc.; Housing for special areas and needs. Transit Oriented Development (TOD), Public Perception and user behavior; Slums, Squatters, and informal housing; National Housing Policies, Programs and Schemes Standards for housing and community facilities;
  • Section B2.2: Planning Techniques and Management – Application of G.I.S; Tools and techniques of Surveys – Physical, Topographical, Urban Economics, Land use, and Socio-economic Surveys; Law of demand and supply of land and its use in planning; Local self-governance, Graphic presentation of spatial data; Decision support system and Land Information System; Urban geography and econometrics; Demography and equity in planning, Management of Infrastructure Projects.
  • Section B2.3: Infrastructure Planning – Process and Principles of Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering; Intelligent Transportation Systems; Traffic survey methods, Traffic flow Analysis; Urban and Rural Infrastructure System Network Traffic analysis and design considerations; Mass transportation planning; Road capacity and Travel demand forecasting; Traffic and transport management and control in urban areas;

GATE AR 2026: Exam Pattern

GATE Architecture 2026’s exam pattern has been revised this year. According to the revised exam pattern:

  • The paper will include a total of three sections.
  • These three sections will be General Aptitude (GA), Part A (mandatory section for all candidates and Part B (Architecture & Planning).
  • The entire paper is 65 questions (Multiple Choice Questions) for 100 marks.
  • Total duration of the examination: 3 hours.
