Its main programme, the Diploma in Dramatic Arts, takes 3 years and admits 30 students per batch through a highly competitive selection process. As a specialised government theatre institution, NSD does not currently feature in NIRF or other major Indian rankings.

Diploma training combines theatre history with practical work in movement, voice, lighting, design, direction and production management. Students also stage live productions in NSD's campus auditoria. The specialisation options include Acting with 22 seats, Design with 5 seats, and Direction with 5 seats from Semester 4.

Every admitted Diploma student receives a stipend of up to INR 9,500 per month throughout the 3-year course. This support effectively meets the full training cost, including the general-quota course fee of INR 13,510, and helps with living expenses.

NSD's outreach work includes extension workshops and theatre-in-education activities across India. School drama programmes and summer theatre camps form part of this work; they do not lead to a degree.

NSD Admission Process

For the Diploma, NSD assesses theatre ability through auditions rather than a written entrance examination. Applicants first submit their theatre experience and supporting documents. Two rounds of practical selection follow. With only 30 seats per batch, admission is among the most competitive in India's performing arts education.

Diploma in Dramatic Arts

Applicants must meet these conditions:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university.
  • Be 18 to 30 years old on July 1 of the admission year.
  • Upper-age relaxation is 5 years for SC/ST applicants and 3 years for OBC applicants.
  • Have taken part in at least 6 stage productions. Certificates, production brochures or press clippings must support this experience.

The application and selection process has three stages:

  1. Submit a written application that explains your theatre background and includes documents proving participation in productions.
  2. Attend Phase 1 regional auditions, held across 18 cities in India. These assess performance, improvisation, movement and voice.
  3. If shortlisted, take part in the Phase 2 intensive workshop in New Delhi. This lasts 5 days, and workshop performance determines the final selection.

No cutoff percentile or qualifying marks threshold applies to this Diploma. Theatre experience and audition performance decide admission, and graduates from any academic stream may apply.

PhD in Theatre

Applicants need a postgraduate qualification, such as an MA, M.Phil, an NSD Diploma or an equivalent qualification, along with a research proposal. Selection includes a written test and an interview. Research areas cover theatre theory, research based on theatre practice, and India's classical and folk theatre traditions.

NSD Placements and Career Outcomes

Graduates usually find work through independent auditions, casting contacts and their own efforts. NSD does not run conventional campus recruitment drives. Its professional training supports careers in theatre, cinema and television.

The campus also houses the NSD Repertory Company, one of India's leading professional theatre groups. The company has recruited Diploma graduates. Other career routes extend from performing and directing to teaching theatre and writing plays.

Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Kapur, Raghubir Yadav and Seema Biswas are among NSD's notable alumni. Their careers span theatre, films and television. Former students also form a network across theatre companies and production houses in India and abroad.

NSD Campus and Infrastructure

Bahawalpur House, Bhagwan Das Road, Mandi House, New Delhi 110001 is NSD's campus address. This central Delhi cultural district places students within walking distance of institutions such as Sangeet Natak Akademi and Lalit Kala Akademi. The compact campus has the facilities needed for professional theatre training.

Students use 3 performance venues: the main auditorium, Abhimanch; Sammukh, a smaller space with a flexible layout; and Bahumukh, a studio theatre. Practical facilities include costume design and fabrication workshops, studios for designing and building sets, lighting laboratories, and a movement and voice studio. A specialist library and archive hold scripts, technical resources, and material on Indian and international theatre history.

Diploma students can stay in campus hostels. Both male and female residents pay INR 3,500 per month for hostel accommodation. NSD also organises Bharat Rang Mahotsav, the annual National Theatre Festival, at the campus and other Delhi venues. Held each January to February, it brings together Indian and international theatre companies.

NSD, FTII and SRFTI Comparison

Students considering government-funded training in the performing arts often compare NSD New Delhi, FTII Pune and SRFTI Kolkata. All three are leading national institutions supported by the central government. Entry is highly competitive, while their subjects and career routes differ.

For a career centred on stage theatre, NSD is a main choice. FTII is known for film direction, cinematography and editing, with a stronger route into commercial Hindi cinema. Students in eastern India seeking film and television specialisations often prefer SRFTI.

Acting applicants should consider the type of performance they want to study: NSD builds its training around live theatre, while FTII focuses on screen acting. These routes can complement each other. Many practitioners take short workshops in other disciplines after finishing their primary degree.
