Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akadami (IGRUA), Rae Bareli is a leading Government of India aviation training institute under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Established on 7 November 1985, it is known as the "IIT of aviation" for pilot training in India. The academy is a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Its main base is at Fursatganj in Amethi district, Uttar Pradesh, while the other training bases are in Gondia, Maharashtra, and Kalaburagi, Karnataka.

The residential Fursatganj campus covers 239 acres and has its own 6,080-foot runway, aircraft hangars, navigation systems, flight simulators, and residential facilities. Students train on Diamond DA40 single-engine and Diamond DA42 twin-engine aircraft. The academy recorded its highest operational total of 19,110 flying hours in 2021-22.

Pilot training academies are outside the NIRF framework, so IGRUA does not take part in NIRF rankings. Its courses cover commercial pilot training, aircraft maintenance, aviation degrees, and professional training for licensed pilots.

  • The Ab-initio to Commercial Pilot Licence programme has 125 seats, follows a residential format for 36 months, and is approved by the DGCA.
  • The integrated AME and B.Sc Aircraft Maintenance course offers 30 seats through a 3-year residential programme.
  • The B.Sc Aviation qualification is completed alongside the professional training and is awarded by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Faizabad.
  • The Certificate in Crew Resource Management is a short-term course intended for licensed pilots.
Admission Update: The 2026-27 batch is currently in progress. Applications for the 2027-28 cycle are expected to remain open from February to April 2027. Students can apply through the official website at igrua.gov.in.

IGRUA Admission Process

Selection for every IGRUA course takes place through the institute's own entrance examination. Scores from CUET, JEE, or another external test are not accepted, and admission is not available through a management quota.

CPL (Ab-initio) Admission

  • Applicants must have completed Class 12 with Physics, Mathematics, and English. The minimum aggregate is 50%, reduced to 45% for SC, ST, OBC, and EWS applicants.
  • The permitted age range is 17 to 28 years for General and EWS candidates, 17 to 31 years for OBC candidates, and 17 to 33 years for SC and ST candidates.
  • An applicant must be unmarried when submitting the application.
  • A valid DGCA Class I Medical Certificate from a DGCA-approved medical examiner must be obtained before admission.
  • The first selection stage is an online written examination covering Physics, Mathematics, English, General Awareness, and Reasoning. Shortlisted students then appear for the Pilot Aptitude Test.
  • The final merit list considers the written examination score and Pilot Aptitude Test result.

AME and B.Sc Aviation Admission

  • Students need Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics or an Engineering Diploma. They must have at least 50%, or 45% if they belong to the SC, ST, OBC, or EWS category.
  • The IGRUA written entrance test assesses Physics, Mathematics, and English.
  • AME applicants do not take a separate Pilot Aptitude Test. Their selection depends only on written examination merit.

CPL and AME are fully residential programmes. Applicants must submit their forms through igrua.gov.in during the institute's annual application period, which generally runs from February to April.

IGRUA Placements and Career Outcomes

Instead of running a standard campus placement drive, IGRUA prepares students to receive a Commercial Pilot Licence from the DGCA. CPL holders must then complete type rating for an aircraft such as the Boeing 737, Airbus A320, ATR 72, or Q-400. This training can be taken at a partner facility such as the Flight Simulation Technique Centre. After type rating, graduates may apply for First Officer roles with Indian airlines.

75 to 80% of CPL graduates obtain work as airline First Officers or Cadet Pilots. Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet are among the confirmed recruiters. The academy also provides pilot training for the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and Border Security Force, so its former students work across civil and defence aviation.

Note: Employment opportunities for CPL holders change with demand in the aviation industry. IGRUA's responsibility finishes when the student reaches the CPL stage, and each graduate must arrange type rating independently. This later training can cost an additional INR 5 to 8 lakhs.

IGRUA Campus and Infrastructure

The main IGRUA campus occupies 239 acres at Fursatganj Airfield in Amethi district, Uttar Pradesh. Aviation infrastructure includes a paved 6,080-foot runway, air traffic control services, hangars, an aviation fuel station, and fire-fighting systems that meet ICAO standards. Its landing and navigation equipment includes ILS, DVOR, and DME.

Flight instruction uses glass-cockpit Diamond DA40 single-engine and Diamond DA42 twin-engine aircraft. Students also have access to advanced flight simulators, a Boeing 737 procedures trainer, and a full-motion simulator. Flight operations management has followed international standards through cooperation with CAE Inc. since 2007. A partnership with Boeing started in 2022 to strengthen safety and quality.

Residential facilities include separate hostels for male and female students with a combined capacity of 200. The campus also provides a swimming pool, gymnasium, sports ground, and outdoor courts. Multimedia classrooms, along with meteorology and navigation laboratories, are located in the academic block. Training is additionally conducted at the academy's bases in Gondia, Maharashtra, and Kalaburagi, Karnataka.

IGRUA Scholarships

Since the CPL course costs INR 45,00,000, eligible students may consider scholarships and education loans to fund their studies.

Students should begin the loan process early because aviation training involves high expenses. IGRUA students commonly use SBI's Scholar Loan and specialised aviation loan products offered by major public sector banks.

IGRUA vs NFTI Gondia vs Indamer Aviation

Students planning commercial pilot training may compare IGRUA with the National Flying Training Institute in Gondia and Indamer Aviation Academy. All three are DGCA-approved flying training organisations, but they differ in ownership, intake, fees, and access to airfields.
