All other sciences are included in the multidisciplinary field of geology, but there is a fundamental understanding of the elements that make up the materials of Earth that unites them all. Geology investigates the properties of Earth, including its composition, structure, prehistoric life, internal and surficial processes, and the influence of geology on daily life, from the surface environment to the planet's core. Through research, outreach, and education, the planet is to be understood and protected. Students use the entire Earth as their field of study when studying geosciences in the classroom, lab, and field. Students are given practical experience studying earth materials through the curriculum, frequently in small experiential settings.
