M.Ed or Master of Education is a 2 year, PG professional course that opens up plenty of opportunities for the existing educators or people already involved in the field of education. Master of Education (M.Ed.) - All Information

It consists of four semesters with an option to choose from various specialised subjects; the course structure is based upon the norms laid by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and is controlled by the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).

To be eligible for appearing in M.Ed, the candidates must pass either an undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Ed, B.Com, BSc. etc) or an integrated course (B.El.Ed, B.A. B.Ed., B.Sc. B.Ed etc) with a minimum percentage of 50-60% (a 5% relaxation for the reserved categories) and qualify the entrance examination.

UGC approved Universities like University of Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University offer M.Ed with specializations. However, a few universities like Shivaji University in Kolhapur also offer M.Ed as a one year course that can be taken as a regular or a correspondence degree.

After completing this course, the candidate is eligible for roles such as curriculum designer, special education teacher, educational administrator, soft-skills trainer, principal, etc.

All About M.Ed Course

  • M.Ed is a PG degree programme especially beneficial for the people inclined towards education, who have good communication skills and problem solving skills.

M.Ed Admission Process

In order to get admitted into an M.Ed programme, the candidates can go through the online process, which depends both, on merit basis and entrance exam basis. While a few institutes mandate merit in qualifying examinations (like B.A., B.Ed, B.A. B.Ed, BSc, BSc. B.Ed, MSc. Ed), others rather prefer written entrance tests. Once the chosen universities/ colleges release the entrance test forms and/or merit lists, one can apply effortlessly.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should fulfill the following criteria in order to secure a position at their preferred college/institute:

  • Complete an undergraduate degree programme (B.A., BSc, B.Ed, B.Com etc) from a UGC approved university/college with a minimum qualifying percentage of 50-60%.
  • For the reserved categories (Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Classes, Differently Abled Candidates) there is a 5% relaxation in the minimum percentage requirement.
  • Candidates having degrees like B.El.Ed, BA Education, BSc. Education and MSc. Education can be eligible with a 55% minimum mandate from a government college.

M.Ed Distance Education

Distance learning is beneficial to the candidates who either cannot leave their full time jobs to take up a regular course or the ones who live far off from the places that offer such programmes. Distance education has come a long way. M.Ed is one post graduate course that can be undertaken in correspondence mode. The minimum time duration for the distant mode of M.Ed is 2 years that can be stretched to additional 2 years.

Admission in the distance education programme of M.Ed is based on merit; the marks secured in the qualifier exams like B.Ed need to be at least 55% with a 5% relaxation to the reserved categories from a UGC approved university. Some colleges prefer and necessitate a two year professional experience in a government recognized institute in education.
