What Is FMGE?

FMGE was introduced through the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) conducts the test and sends the results to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and State Medical Councils. The medical council, not NBEMS, decides eligibility for provisional or permanent registration.

It is not an entrance test for an MBBS course or a postgraduate seat. It assesses eligible graduates who earned their primary medical qualification outside India. Passing the exam, collecting the Pass Certificate and completing the applicable registration requirements are separate steps.

FMGE October 2026 Dates

The general edit window has ended. The selective window is for deficient photographs, signatures and thumb impressions; the document-deficiency portal deals with qualification, attestation, eligibility and citizenship evidence. Use the correction route named in your applicant login or deficiency notice.

The earlier 9 January 2027 exam date has been withdrawn. NBEMS has said that sitting will move to a later date in January/February 2027. The October examination is an additional sitting, not a renamed January exam.

FMGE Eligibility

The qualification certificate must show that you passed the final examination and completed all mandatory courses by 31 August 2026. A certificate issued later must still establish that the result was declared by the cutoff. An unfinished compulsory course cannot be treated as a completed medical qualification.

Eligibility Certificate and NEET-UG

An Eligibility Certificate from NMC or the former Medical Council of India is required where applicable. The stated exceptions cover qualifications obtained before 15 March 2002, admission before 15 March 2002, and admission from 15 May 2013 to 3 January 2014, both dates included. For an exempt admission period, the admission letter must establish the exact joining date.

For admission to a foreign primary medical course from May 2018, the qualifying NEET-UG result serves as the Eligibility Certificate, subject to the applicable MBBS-entry requirements. Its validity for joining the foreign course, including a pre-medical or language course, is three years from the result date. Age, Class 12 subjects and marks, and any claimed category relaxation must have been valid at the time of admission; passing FMGE does not correct an ineligible admission.

Admission from 18 November 2021

The FMGL Regulations, 2021 apply to this cohort. Core requirements include a medical course of at least 54 months, a separate internship of at least 12 months in the same foreign institution, English-medium instruction, the mandatory medical subjects and registration or licensing eligibility in the awarding country on the same basis as its citizens. The regulations also require supervised internship in India for permanent registration.

The course, training and internship must meet the same-institution and awarding-country rules. Do not assume that an online course, an offshore arrangement or a transfer meets those conditions simply because a degree has been issued. The applicable regulations and any specific NMC relief govern the route.

Who is exempt from the screening test?

The five-country exemption is narrower than having an overseas MBBS. It requires an undergraduate medical qualification from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, a postgraduate medical qualification awarded in one of those countries, and recognition for enrolment as a medical practitioner there. An undergraduate degree alone does not satisfy this exemption.

Qualifications from Pakistan have additional security-clearance conditions. The permitted routes cover admission before November 2018, or later admission with MHA security clearance up to 13 April 2022. Migrants and their children granted Indian citizenship follow the specified citizenship-document route without an additional clearance already covered during citizenship vetting. The result remains subject to the applicable MHA clearance or citizenship verification.

Application Fee and Required Documents

The October application window ran from 11 to 25 September. A fresh form cannot be submitted through the correction window. The completed form requires successful payment; a bank debit alone is not confirmation if the application still shows a pending payment.

Payment-gateway charges may be additional. The fee is not refundable or transferable to another sitting, including when an applicant is absent or found ineligible.

The apostille or Embassy attestation must belong to the exact degree or provisional pass certificate uploaded. An attestation for a different document does not authenticate the qualification proof.

An Indian citizen who obtained the medical qualification in Nepal and was not issued an Indian passport has a specified government-photo-ID alternative in the document rules. This is a limited exception, not a general replacement for passport evidence. OCI applicants need both the OCI card and the valid passport of their country of citizenship.

Name, nationality, email, Aadhaar, mobile number and test city were excluded from the general edit window. For an unresolved document deficiency, submit the corrected evidence through the designated portal by the deadline rather than assuming an email attachment completes the correction.

FMGE Exam Pattern and Passing Marks

Each part contains time-bound sections. Once a section closes, you cannot return to it or change its answers. The next section starts automatically; finishing early does not let you open it ahead of time. Marking a question for review only helps while its section is still open.

For example, NBEMS describes a section of 50 questions with 50 minutes plus one minute for attendance. The actual number of sections can vary. Treat this as the explanation of the timer system, not a promise that every sitting has exactly three sections per part.

The 100-mark pre/para-clinical group and 200-mark clinical group are syllabus weightages. They are not the question counts for the morning and afternoon parts. Both exam parts have 150 questions.

The pass requirement applies to the combined 300 marks. NBEMS does not publish separate Part I and Part II scores. There is no category-wise reduced passing score or admission-style rank cutoff in this scheme, and no provision for re-totaling, re-evaluation or grace marks.

FMGE Syllabus and Subject-Wise Marks

FMGE follows the NMC Competency Based Undergraduate Curriculum for MBBS. Pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects account for 100 marks; clinical subjects account for 200. The allocations below are subject-level marks, not predicted chapter-wise question counts.

How to Use the Weightage for Revision

Medicine and its allied areas add up to 48 marks; General Surgery and its allied areas add up to 47. Keep Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiotherapy, Anaesthesiology, Orthopaedics and Radiodiagnosis in the revision plan rather than treating the two core subjects as their entire groups. Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Community Medicine add another 60 marks together.

Review mistakes by the decision the question tests: recognising the diagnosis, choosing an investigation, interpreting a finding or selecting management. If you repeatedly choose the wrong treatment despite identifying the diagnosis, repeating diagnosis-only questions will not address that gap.

Practise mixed questions with a section timer and review uncertain answers before that block closes. This matches a specific FMGE restriction: time left after a section ends cannot be used to repair its responses. Keep full-paper practice long enough to cover both parts, not only a single 150-question sitting.

Admit Card and Exam-Day Schedule

The test city is due on 20 October; the admit card is due on 27 October. The city message does not give permission to enter the examination centre. Download the admit card from the NBEMS applicant login and carry a colour printout. Save it before the result is declared, after which the admit-card download will no longer be available.

The end times include the attendance allowance. The reporting counter closes 30 minutes before each part; reaching the premises without reaching that counter is not enough.

Carry at least one valid, non-expired government photo ID whose details were supplied in the form: PAN Card, Driving Licence, Voter ID, Passport, Aadhaar Card with photograph. If you consented to Aadhaar authentication and entered Aadhaar details, carry it and keep it unlocked for verification on exam day. An e-Aadhaar printout must be clear and in colour.

The ID name must match the admit card. A legal name change needs the relevant marriage certificate, divorce decree, legal name-change document or Gazette notification. Candidates claiming a scribe or extra time must carry the applicable UDID/disability certificate and fulfil the separate approval requirements.

Phones, smart watches and other prohibited electronic items cannot be taken into the test lab. Keep the afternoon reporting time in your travel plan; the break is not the end of the examination.

FMGE Answer Key and Result

NBEMS will publish the October answer key through the applicant login. It will show Question IDs, correct answer IDs, your response IDs and the score for each question. This is the official record to use when comparing your responses; a recalled answer list is not your recorded response sheet.

Challenge a technical error by 2 November 2026 through the NBEMS Communication Web Portal using your registered email identity, with supporting medical literature. Difficulty alone is not a valid challenge.

The result is scheduled by 30 November 2026 and will show pass/fail status. The passing requirement is 150 marks. For example, 150 meets the threshold; 149 does not. This is a qualifying score, not a percentile calculated against other candidates.

Download the scorecard through your login and save it. For the October session, the download period is six months from result declaration. A withheld result needs the specific issue raised by NBEMS to be resolved; it should not be treated as an ordinary failed result.

Pass Certificate, Internship and Registration

Collect the FMGE Pass Certificate after in-person document and identity verification. The entry slip lists the required documents. Distribution is tentatively expected within four weeks of results; NBEMS issues the individual schedule separately.

The scorecard cannot replace the Pass Certificate for State Medical Council registration. Candidates who miss their assigned collection schedule must collect the certificate within six months of the result. The October rules state that candidature and result will be cancelled if that limit is missed.

Internship requirements depend on the applicable admission-date cohort and training record. For the FMGL 2021 cohort, the regulations include supervised internship in India for at least 12 months. Do not apply that statement as a blanket answer to every older graduate.

NMC's clarification dated 8 June 2026 says graduates admitted before 18 November 2021 may be considered for permanent registration without another Indian internship if their foreign internship is recognised under the earlier rules and all applicable conditions are met. The State Medical Council decides after checking the records. Existing internship allotments are not automatically cancelled or shortened by that clarification.

For online study affected by COVID-19 or the Ukraine-Russia war, the council checks evidence of compensatory physical training. A compensation certificate alone does not establish registration eligibility. Relevant transcripts, clinical postings, passport records and other authenticated training documents may be examined together.

The same June clarification states that those admitted to a foreign medical course after 2019 must clear FMGE within 10 years of admission. Unlimited exam attempts do not remove this applicable time limit.

If you plan postgraduate study, NEET PG is a separate entrance route. FMGE qualification does not by itself satisfy every PG requirement: the relevant registration and internship conditions must also be met.
