What Is NEET PG?

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses is an entrance and ranking examination after MBBS. It is not the NEET UG examination for entry into MBBS. NBEMS conducts the test and publishes results; MCC and state admission authorities handle the relevant counselling seats.

The 2026 admission scope includes 50% All India Quota seats, state-quota seats, private and deemed institutions, Armed Forces Medical Services institutions, and the specified NBEMS postgraduate routes. The branch and seat category still determine where a candidate registers.

AIIMS, PGIMER Chandigarh, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SCTIMST are outside the centralised NEET PG MD/MS admission route. A national medical-college ranking is therefore not a list of colleges accepting this examination. The participating-college guide separates admission routes.

NEET PG Eligibility

The conditions below describe the 2026 eligibility rules. The 30 September internship deadline belongs to that cycle, not 2027.

An Indian medical graduate needs all three core conditions: the recognised MBBS qualification, medical registration and completion of the required internship by the deadline. A good entrance score cannot compensate for an internship that finishes too late.

Foreign nationals have a separate route: the equivalent qualification must be NMC-recognised, applicable MHA security clearance is needed before applying, and temporary registration for admission is subject to home-country registration and permission/NOC. Indian citizens and OCI candidates with overseas qualifications must not be treated as foreign nationals merely because their degree was earned abroad.

Application, Dates and Fees

The examination schedule below is from 2026. The result date is the actual declaration date, not the earlier deadline printed in the application bulletin.

Paper Pattern and Syllabus

The 2026 format uses five timed groups. These are not five named subject papers: questions from the MBBS curriculum are distributed across them.

After a group closes, its answers cannot be changed. Finishing one group early does not open the next group early. This makes a 36-question, 42-minute practice block more useful than an untimed list when practising exam navigation.

The syllabus follows MBBS subjects: anatomy, physiology and biochemistry; pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, forensic and community medicine; and clinical disciplines such as medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and allied subjects. Preparation and Previous Papers

Use case questions to connect the symptom or investigation with the underlying mechanism. For example, a clinical presentation can require physiology to interpret the change, pathology to explain it and pharmacology to distinguish treatment options. Keep these linked notes together rather than learning the same case three times.

Review a wrong answer by cause: missing knowledge, a missed case clue, confusion between two options, or an answer changed too late. Each needs a different correction. The preparation guide includes a group-timing method and an error-review example.

Result, Qualifying Cutoff and Counselling

The 2026 result was declared on 24 September; scorecards and candidate-specific answer keys were available from 1 October. The result notice records 2,63,544 appearances on 30 August and 2,416 in the affected Jaipur-centre re-examination on 5 September. These are separate examination-date counts, not a published pass percentage.

Qualifying makes a candidate eligible for the relevant admission process; it does not secure a particular specialty. A college closing rank depends on branch, category, quota and round. The cutoff guide separates qualifying marks from college closing ranks.
