The Gladiator event is known for its rigorous intellectual challenges and is conducted in two rounds. Where the mightiest minds get filtered through the sieve of public speaking, critical thinking, and on-the-spot rebuttals.
14 teams across India have participated and GIBS Business School etched their mark on the annals of debating history at the Gladiator debate event. They have achieved this mark with the team’s determination, reparation, and the spirit of teamwork showcased by L S Eshwar Rao and Bharath Bhat, two bright PGDM 2nd year students from GIBS Business School.
The First Challenge: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): The first day’s challenge was to give a stunning speech in favor of DEI showcasing the skills of “Public Speaking”. Given just two minutes to present their stance in favor, Eshwar and Bharath laid out a compelling argument that instigated the public to action.
However, they bravely and strategically faced the questions from 13 teams for the next five minutes. This momentous task was an examination of understanding and an opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking on their feet, defend perspectives, and turn inquiry in their favor.

The Second Round: A Battle Against Consumerism
6 teams have progressed to the second round making it more challenging for Eshwar and Bharath. The topic now was a sharp pivot to a critical examination of Consumerism: “We don’t promote consumerism, we offer solutions”. Tasked with arguing against consumerism, the duo had to tread a fine line between critique and constructive debate.
Format: The format was more demanding this time, with each team having a minute to introduce their topic followed by a 7-minute presentation, and a final minute for a strong conclusion.
Eshwar and Bharath approached the topic with a nuanced understanding, with convincing delivery, illustrated with examples and thought- provoking questions, and arguing that the unchecked appetite for consumer goods leads to environmental degradation and perpetuates economic disparities.
They proposed that offering solutions meant fostering a culture of sustainability, mindfulness, and ethical consumption.
The Road to 3rd Place
As they competed against some of India’s brightest minds from various colleges across India, Eshwar, Bharath, and GIBS Business School achieved remarkable success in earning 3rd Place in this debate competition. Eshwar and Bharath’s success at the Gladiator debate event is an inspiring tale of perseverance, transcending any single debate stage.
Their victory showcased not only how much effort goes into preparation but also their perseverance during moments of doubt and their unwavering pursuit of excellence. Eshwar and Bharath not only represented their institution but also set an example for future participants. GIBS Business School team’s performance at the Gladiator debate is an inspiring demonstration of what students can accomplish when driven by passion, supported by their institution, and united towards a common goal.
