All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is likely to conduct the National Exit Test (NExT) for MBBS students. The NExT exam will serve as an entrance exam for final year MBBS students, granting them registration as doctors and providing merit-based admission to postgraduate programs. It will also function as a screening exam for foreign medical graduates seeking to practice in India. The NMC Act has extended the deadline for conducting the NExT exam until September 2024.

AIIMS associate teachers are currently involved in creating multiple-choice questions for the first round of the NExT Exam, which will focus on clinical learning. While AIIMS has met with the National Medical Commission (NMC), the official notification designating AIIMS as the nodal agency is still pending.

Preparations for the NExT exam involve determining the exam modalities, syllabus, type and pattern (analytical or multiple choice), number of tests, regulations, and providing students with sufficient preparation time. Mock tests will also be conducted before the main exam.

The NExT exam is equally important for all MBBS students worldwide, including foreign medical graduates (FMGs). It will be conducted in two parts. The first part includes a multiple-choice paper covering various medical fields. Successful completion of this part will result in provisional registration and a one-year mandatory internship. The second part will assess the clinical skills of the students and will take place after the completion of the internship.

While the exam pattern may vary, the content will align with the final MBBS exams. Students who have attended classes and studied for their final exams should be well-prepared for the NExT exam.
