Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is the university's centre for distance and online studies in Aligarh. CDOE is a constituent centre of AMU and runs UGC-DEB-approved courses through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online Learning (OL). AMU is a Central University and an Institute of National Importance under the Aligarh Muslim University Act, 1920. It began as the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 and became a university in 1920.

CDOE does not receive a separate NIRF or other major institutional ranking because it is part of AMU rather than an independent institution. AMU holds UGC recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B). Students completing a CDOE programme receive an AMU degree or certificate, backed by the standing of a Central University and Institute of National Importance.

The centre is based in the Nasheman Building on Anoop Shahar Road, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. It also maintains learner support centres in several Indian cities. These centres help distance learners obtain study materials, attend examinations and receive academic counselling.

CDE AMU Admission Process

CDOE uses an open admission system for its undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate courses. Eligible students apply online through cdoeamu.ac.in, and no entrance examination is required. Applications are generally accepted during the annual July to September registration period and are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

  1. Select an eligible programme on cdoeamu.ac.in and complete the online application form.
  2. Pay the application fee of INR 300.
  3. Upload the required certificates, marksheets, identity proof and passport-size photograph.
  4. Submit the application within the registration window and wait for confirmation of enrolment.

Undergraduate Programmes

Students who have passed 10+2 through any recognised board may apply for BA, B.Com or B.Lib.I.Sc. The 10+2 condition applies to every BA subject. Applicants need their Class 12 marksheet and certificate, identity proof and a passport-size photograph. Selection does not involve an entrance test.

Postgraduate Programmes

Admission to MA, M.Com, M.Lib.I.Sc and MBA requires an undergraduate degree from a recognised university. An MA applicant generally needs a BA in the same subject or a closely related field. MBA applications are accepted from graduates of any discipline. Students who meet the relevant qualification can seek direct admission online without appearing for an entrance examination.

Diploma and Certificate Programmes

The minimum qualification for a diploma may be 10+2 or an undergraduate degree, depending on the course. Certificate courses generally accept students who have passed Class 10 or hold a higher qualification. Since these are short-duration programmes, working professionals and students may complete them alongside employment or another course. They follow the same online application procedure and annual July to September registration cycle.

CDE AMU Campus and Infrastructure

CDOE operates from the Nasheman Building, Anoop Shahar Road, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, 202002. Its facilities form part of AMU's wider 467-acre campus in Aligarh. Because the centre teaches through distance and online modes, most learners use its digital platforms and support centres instead of attending a residential campus.

ICT-enabled laboratories and server rooms opened at the Aligarh premises in 2025 to support online teaching. CDOE also publishes the peer-reviewed CDOE Journal, which focuses on distance education research and carries ISSN 2278-9251. Selected industry partnerships provide placement assistance to graduates of some diploma and certificate programmes.

Learner support centres in different Indian cities help with examinations, academic counselling and the distribution of study materials. Enrolled students can also use CDOE's dedicated online learning portal from any location in India.
