Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) began as Bhagalpur University on 12 July 1960. Based in Bhagalpur, Bihar, it is a public state university that also oversees constituent and affiliated colleges. Its present name dates to 1991, when it was renamed to honour Tilka Manjhi, also called Jabra Paharia. He was a Santali tribal leader and freedom fighter recognised among India's earliest opponents of British rule. The University Grants Commission (UGC) recognises TMBU, which received NAAC Grade B accreditation in Cycle 3, 2021.

Across Bhagalpur and Banka districts, the university's network includes 12 constituent colleges, 25 affiliated colleges and 4 research institutes. Its main campus occupies 264 acres and brings together central teaching departments, five research centres, a central library and residential hostels. Bhagalpur's silk-making heritage, reflected in its name as the Silk City of India, shapes the university's regional setting. TMBU is not currently included in the NIRF ranked list. Teaching and research span six faculties, with programmes at these levels:

  • Undergraduate study: BA (Hons), B.Com (Hons) and B.Sc (Hons).
  • Postgraduate study: MA, M.Com, M.Sc, MCA and LLM.
  • Doctoral research: PhD programmes in science, social science, humanities and commerce subjects.

For BA (Hons), the yearly fee is INR 14,400; B.Sc (Hons) costs INR 43,000 annually. Students pay INR 30,000 a year for M.Sc and INR 23,250 each semester for MCA. Bihar government support available to eligible students at TMBU and its affiliated colleges includes the Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana for women and post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/EBC students through the state scholarship portal.

How to Apply to TMBU

Marks in the qualifying examination form the basis of TMBU's undergraduate and postgraduate selection. BA, B.Sc, B.Com, MA and M.Com applicants do not take a central university entrance examination. MCA selection can depend on either graduation marks or NIMCET, while doctoral applicants follow the relevant eligibility test route. The university issues programme-specific admission notices.

Applying for BA, B.Sc and B.Com Honours

UG applicants use TMBU's admission website at tmbuniv.ac.in. Bihar OFSS guidelines apply wherever required. Complete the following steps:

  • Create an account on the admission portal and pay INR 200 for each subject applied for.
  • Fill in your Class 12 results and give your college preferences within the university's area.
  • Check the merit lists, which use your total Class 12 marks to determine selection.
  • If allotted a seat, visit the assigned college for document checks and payment of the admission fee.

A Class 12 pass from a recognised board is the basic requirement. B.Sc (Hons) applicants must also have studied the required science subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), or Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB). The university publishes separate selection lists for General, SC, ST and OBC/EBC applicants.

Applying for MA, M.Com, M.Sc and LLM

For postgraduate study, applications go through the central online admission system. Selection uses marks from the qualifying undergraduate degree, and seats are filled through several merit lists. M.Sc applicants need a B.Sc (Hons) in the relevant subject with at least 45% marks; an LLB is necessary for LLM admission. Admission to the 2026-28 batch is in progress as of October 2026.

Joining the MCA Programme

Check the notice for your session to see whether MCA selection uses graduation marks or a valid NIMCET score. Applicants must have studied Mathematics in their bachelor's degree. The programme lasts 2 years, follows a semester system and charges INR 23,250 per semester.

Entering a PhD Programme

Doctoral applicants must hold a postgraduate degree with at least 55% marks, or 50% for reserved categories. They must also qualify through a valid UGC NET or CSIR NET score in the relevant subject, or pass the TMBU Research Entrance Test. Admission timing follows the university's notifications. Research takes place across six faculties through constituent departments and five research centres.

TMBU Campus Facilities and Student Life

Bhagalpur's position beside the Ganga gives the university its riverside ecological setting. Within the 264-acre campus are the central administration, postgraduate teaching departments, research centres, library and residential hostels. Students also have access to spaces for sports, fitness, academic programmes and cultural events.

  • The central library has more than 1,54,928 books, 8,050 theses and 323 journal subscriptions. Its reference collection contains 10,233 volumes.
  • Accommodation consists of 4 boys' hostels and 3 girls' hostels. Wi-Fi and mess services are available, with monthly charges between INR 1,500 and INR 2,400.
  • The five research centres are the Agro-Economic Research Centre, Centre of Bioinformatics, University Computer Centre, Centre for Regional Studies and Research Service Centre.
  • A sports complex and gymnasium provide space for physical activities.
  • A medical support centre and canteen serve the campus.
  • An auditorium hosts academic programmes and cultural events.

With five centres dedicated to research, TMBU has a stronger research presence than most state affiliating universities in Bihar. Work at the Agro-Economic Research Centre relates closely to farming and the agricultural economy of Bhagalpur and Banka. Science researchers receive support from the Centre of Bioinformatics. The library's collection exceeds 1.54 lakh books, placing it among the largest at Bihar's state universities.

Scholarships for TMBU Students

Eligible students at the university and its affiliated colleges can seek financial support through Bihar government schemes and the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The state scholarship portal handles Bihar schemes, while NSP provides access to centrally administered scholarships.
