Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna is an autonomous medical institute started by the Government of Bihar in 1983. The Bihar Legislature later gave it the status of a statutory university. IGIMS is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and approved by the UGC. It works as both a teaching hospital and a referral hospital for patients from Bihar and nearby states such as Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The institute is not listed in the NIRF Medical or Overall rankings at present. Its standing comes from its NMC and UGC recognition, its role as a government medical university, and its large hospital setup in Patna.

IGIMS is located at Sheikhpura, Patna, Bihar. Its attached hospital has 500 beds, and a new 1,200-bed building is under construction. The campus also has the State Cancer Institute, the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, and the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), giving students exposure to many major clinical departments.

IGIMS Admission Process

IGIMS admits students through merit-based entrance and counselling routes. The institute does not have management quota, NRI quota, or capitation fee seats. NTA conducts NEET, while IGIMS handles allied health and paramedical admissions directly where applicable.

MBBS Admission

For MBBS, students must pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The minimum required marks are 50% for the General category and 40% for SC/ST candidates. IGIMS Patna has 120 MBBS seats. These are divided among All India Quota seats, which form 15%, State Quota seats, which form 85%, and reserved category seats.

  • Students first appear for NEET UG and use their score for counselling.
  • AIQ applicants register at mcc.nic.in for central counselling.
  • State quota applicants register at ugmac.bih.nic.in for Bihar UGMAC counselling.
  • Selected students complete seat allotment, reporting, and document verification at IGIMS.

MD and MS Residency Admission

Admission to MD and MS courses is through NEET PG. Applicants need an MBBS degree, completion of the 1-year internship, and valid NMC registration. They must register for MCC PG counselling at mcc.nic.in and add IGIMS Patna in their choices. Cutoffs change by subject, and clinical branches such as General Medicine, Radiodiagnosis, and Dermatology usually have higher cut-offs.

DM and M.Ch Super-Specialty Admission

DM and M.Ch seats are filled through NEET SS, the super-specialty entrance exam conducted by NBE. Students need the required MD or MS degree for the super-specialty they apply to. Seats are few, so competition is strong in branches such as Cardiology, Neuro Surgery, and Urology. Counselling is done through MCC SS counselling at mcc.nic.in.

Allied Health and Paramedical Admission

BPT, B.Optom, B.Sc Nursing, B.Sc Cardiac Technology, B.Sc Neuro Technology, B.Sc MLT, and B.Sc Forensic Sciences use NEET UG scores or Class 12 merit, with admission processed by IGIMS. B.Sc and BPT applicants need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. GNM and paramedical diploma admission is based on Class 12 merit under state nursing council norms.

IGIMS Cutoffs

IGIMS MBBS cutoff depends on NEET UG score, counselling quota, category, and seat availability. The 2025 cutoff data can help 2026 applicants understand the level of competition.

CourseQuota / CategoryClosing RankYear
MBBSAIQ, General, Round 38,3172025
MBBSBihar State Quota, General6,9242025

These ranks belong to the 2025 admission cycle. The 2026 closing ranks will depend on NEET UG 2026 scores, category-wise demand, and the number of seats available during counselling.

IGIMS Placements and Career Outcomes

IGIMS does not run corporate campus placements. After MBBS, most students move into clinical work, postgraduate entrance preparation, government medical service, or private practice. The career path follows NMC rules and Bihar health department norms.

Career StagePathwayTypical Compensation
Internship (Year 5.5)Mandatory 1-year rotating internship at IGIMS hospitalINR 17,500 per month stipend, subject to state revision
MD / MS ResidencyNEET PG, followed by most graduatesINR 55,000 to 75,000 per month residency stipend, as per government norms
Government Service (Bihar Health Dept.)BPSC Medical Officer recruitmentINR 56,100 per month at 7th Pay Commission entry level with Grade Pay 5400
Private Clinical PracticeIndependent or hospital-based practice after MBBS or PGVariable based on specialty and city
DM / M.Ch Super-SpecialtyPost-MD/MS route through NEET SSINR 80,000 to 1.20 Lakhs per month super-specialty stipend
Note: Bihar government medical graduates may have to complete a mandatory rural service bond of 1 year after internship. A penalty applies for not following the bond terms as per the current Bihar government bond policy. Students should check the latest IGIMS and Bihar health department notices before admission.

Because IGIMS has a tertiary referral hospital, resident doctors get clinical exposure in medicine, surgery, and super-specialty departments. Graduates from MD, DM, and M.Ch programmes work in private hospitals, government medical colleges across Bihar, and AIIMS-affiliated research programmes.

IGIMS Campus and Infrastructure

IGIMS is based at Sheikhpura in Patna, close to Bihar's main government administrative zone. The hospital has 500 beds, and a 1,200-bed new block is being built. Students train in a campus that includes the State Cancer Institute, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, and SOTTO, which gives them access to tertiary and quaternary care cases.

The academic facilities include department labs, seminar halls, and a central library with medical journals and clinical reference databases. A Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) and a Bioinformatics Centre support PG and doctoral research. Hostels are available on campus for male and female MBBS and PG students, with annual hostel fees of up to INR 20,000 per year.

The super-specialty block has dedicated units for Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Urology, and Oncology. The State Cancer Institute at IGIMS is Bihar's main government-funded cancer treatment centre and provides radiotherapy, medical oncology, and surgical oncology services. These facilities make IGIMS different from many other state medical colleges in Bihar.

IGIMS Scholarships

IGIMS does not run a separate institutional scholarship scheme. Students can apply for government scholarships based on category and family income through the Bihar Scholarship Portal and the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

SchemeEligibilityCoverage
Bihar SC/ST Post-Matric ScholarshipSC/ST students with family income below the state normTuition fee reimbursement and maintenance allowance as per state rules
OBC Scholarship (Bihar)OBC students with family income below INR 1.5 Lakhs per annumPartial maintenance allowance as per Bihar Scholarship Board norms
NSP Central Sector (PM-USP)Students with family income below INR 4.5 Lakhs per annumINR 12,000 to 20,000 per annum

MBBS students who choose the Bihar government service bond may receive fee exemption or a bond security waiver in some admission cycles. Since bond and scholarship rules can change every year, applicants should check the current terms during admission.

IGIMS vs PMCH Patna vs NMCH Patna

Students aiming for government MBBS seats in Patna often compare IGIMS with Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH). All three are government medical colleges in Patna, Bihar, and use NEET UG for admission. The main differences are in establishment year, hospital size, clinical range, and NEET closing ranks.

IGIMS has stronger super-specialty and research facilities than PMCH and NMCH, with dedicated DM and M.Ch programmes in Cardiology, Neuro Surgery, Urology, and Oncology. PMCH is much larger, with 4,500+ beds and a higher patient load, which gives wider clinical exposure but also a more crowded learning setup. NMCH is less competitive than IGIMS by NEET closing rank but has fewer postgraduate options. Students planning a PG career in clinical super-specialties often prefer IGIMS among these three because of its research-focused departments.
