IGNOU B.Ed admission is through an entrance test, followed by a check of academic and teacher-training qualifications. IGNOU has not announced the 2027 entrance-test schedule. Its B.Ed admission portal still carries the January 2026 session, whose examination and result are complete.

The two-year Bachelor of Education programme is offered through open and distance learning, but it includes compulsory school internships and workshops. A graduation degree alone does not meet the admission conditions in the 2026 prospectus. The details below separate those published rules from the next admission cycle.

IGNOU B.Ed 2027 dates and admission

The official B.Ed admission portal is separate from IGNOU's general admission process. Its latest listed entrance admission is for January 2026. No 2027 application opening date, last date or examination date is displayed there.

These dates belong to the completed 2026 admission cycle. The IGNOU announcements list the original application deadline and its extension separately. They do not establish a March examination date or a July application session for 2027.

Who can apply for IGNOU B.Ed?

The 2026 admission rules have two parts: the required degree marks and an eligible teacher-training background. Both matter. A high graduation score does not replace the professional qualification.

The prospectus defines a trained teacher as someone who has completed an NCTE-recognised teacher-education programme face to face. An in-service teacher is employed in an elementary school or at the elementary stage. It also says that both in-service and pre-service candidates who meet the conditions can apply; employment alone is not a substitute for the required training.

Teacher education completed through distance learning does not satisfy this requirement. The exclusion covers D.El.Ed, Diploma in Primary Education and other teacher-education programmes completed in ODL mode. A diploma completed partly face to face and partly through ODL is also excluded. These conditions appear in the 2026 prospectus linked from the B.Ed admission portal.

Reservation and qualifying results

The 2026 notice provides EWS reservation under Central Government rules and provisions for Kashmiri Migrants and war widows under university rules. For OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), the prospectus accepts only the Central List. EWS reservation should not be confused with the separate 5% marks relaxation stated for SC, ST, OBC-NCL and PwD candidates.

Qualifying results must have been declared and all eligibility conditions met when the entrance form is submitted. The prospectus does not allow candidates to secure a rank first and complete a missing qualification later. A master's degree obtained without a first degree is not accepted for academic study at IGNOU.

Application and fees

In 2026, entrance registration was online only. IGNOU asked applicants to register on the dedicated B.Ed portal and then complete the entrance application; hard-copy forms were not accepted. The application covered academic qualifications, teacher education and category details, which were checked again at admission.

The entrance fee and course fee are paid at different stages. The 2026 prospectus specifically tells applicants not to send the programme fee with the entrance form. Selected candidates receive a separate admission and payment communication. It specifies a demand draft for the programme fee; the next admission offer will determine the instructions for that cycle.

The 2026 prospectus does not permit a category-code change after the entrance form is submitted. Original documents are checked at the Regional Centre after an admission offer. The form therefore starts the selection process; it does not itself confirm eligibility or a seat.

Entrance test pattern and subject choice

The 2026 admission announcement gives an entrance-test duration of two hours. For question structure, the official 2025 paper provides a historical reference: 100 multiple-choice questions carrying 100 marks, answered on an OMR sheet. This is not a newly announced 2027 pattern.

Part A brings together language comprehension, reasoning, awareness and teaching-related questions. Part B offers Science, Mathematics, Social Science, English and Hindi. Only one Part B subject is attempted. The 2025 booklet says that attempting more than one subject makes that part liable to cancellation.

The subject option changes only the final 20 questions; the four Part A sections are common. Educational and General Awareness plus Teaching-Learning and the School together account for 50 of the 100 questions in that paper. A subject choice therefore does not turn the entrance test into a subject-only examination.

These are the broad areas covered by the historical paper. IGNOU has not released a detailed 2027 entrance syllabus or marking instructions. The official 2025 question paper shows how the subjects were grouped in that examination.

Course structure and practical work

The 2026 course has 72 credits spread across two years. The first year includes childhood and development, education in India, learning, language and subject teaching. In the second year, the core courses include curriculum, assessment, inclusive schooling, and gender and society.

Students choose two content-based methodology courses from Science, Social Science, Mathematics, English and Hindi. The second year also includes one optional course. Practical work runs alongside theory through workshops, professional-capacity activities and internships; it is not postponed until after all theory papers.

School internships take 20 weeks

The 2026 prospectus sets four weeks of internship in the first year and 16 weeks in the second. Students attend the internship school daily according to its timings, and the prospectus does not permit leave during the internship. The school-work requirement is an important part of deciding whether the programme fits around employment.

The programme also requires separate workshops in the two years. The prospectus does not allow both workshops in one year and requires the relevant internship activities to be completed before each workshop. At counselling, candidates submit the prescribed certificate confirming facilities for practical work, including the internship.

For theory courses, assignments carry 30% and term-end examinations carry 70% in the 2026 prospectus. Practical work has its own assessment, including school activities, portfolios, reflective journals and workshop performance. These course assessments are separate from the entrance-test score used to select applicants.

Result, merit lists and counselling

IGNOU's 2026 B.Ed entrance result page confirms that counselling for the January 2026 programme depends on regional or cluster merit, rank and available seats. The admission announcement specifies Nodal Regional Centre-wise merit lists. A score alone therefore does not show whether a candidate has secured a place.

The 2026 prospectus limits each Programme Study Centre to 50 seats. Selection depends on the relevant regional or cluster merit list and available seats, with reservation applied under the admission rules. A cutoff from one centre or category does not establish the score needed for another.

Original certificates are examined at counselling. Academic results, the NCTE-recognised face-to-face teacher-training qualification, applicable category evidence and the practical-work certificate all affect admission. Permission to sit the entrance test is not acceptance of those qualifications.

For the 2026 entrance test, IGNOU invited answer-key queries by email until 26 April 2026 at 6 pm. The official answer-key notice gives that year's process. The objection process for 2027 has not been announced.
