Who can apply for VITREE 2027?

For a regular PhD, applicants normally need a relevant master’s degree with at least 60% marks or a 6.5 CGPA out of 10. For Direct PhD, a four-year B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc. Agriculture degree with at least 75% marks or a 7.5 CGPA is required. The Deep Technology route needs a relevant master’s degree with 75% marks or a 7.5 CGPA, along with a valid GATE score, an M.S. by Research or an M.Tech by Research.

Part-time PhD applications are available at the VIT Bhopal campus for eligible teachers and sponsored candidates from approved research organisations or industry. Applicants should read the programme rules carefully because the qualifying degree and work conditions change by route.

VITREE exam pattern and selection

VITREE is a two-hour computer-based test with 100 multiple-choice questions. PhD and Deep Tech applicants who enter with a postgraduate qualification answer 70 technical, 15 English communication and 15 statistics and probability questions. Direct PhD and UG-qualified Deep Tech applicants answer 80 technical and 20 English communication questions. There is no negative marking, but a zero total score means the candidate cannot attend the interview.

Final selection considers qualifying-degree marks, VITREE performance, a research proposal and the personal interview. A valid GATE or NET qualification can also support eligibility and the fellowship route where applicable.

Fees and fellowship

The one-time caution deposit is Rs. 3,000. Internal full-time PhD, Direct PhD and Deep Tech students pay Rs. 40,000 per year as tuition, while external part-time teachers pay Rs. 60,000 and external part-time industry candidates pay Rs. 75,000 per year. A one-time thesis fee of Rs. 10,000 is payable at submission.

VIT lists monthly fellowships for eligible scholars. For example, a regular PhD scholar with a valid GATE or NET qualification can receive Rs. 35,000 in the first year and Rs. 40,000 in the second and third years at the Vellore, Chennai or AP campuses. The amount and conditions vary by campus and programme.
