CIFE ( Central Institute of fisheries education) Mumbai was established in the year 1961 on the 6th of June by the Government of India along with UNDP. It was founded primarily with the intention of providing post-graduate education and training to the nation's in-service fisheries workers in order to support fisheries development initiatives. The college offers M.F.Sc and Ph.D. courses in 6 different fisheries and agricultural areas. 

Admission into the Ph.D. courses is done through entrance tests and interviews. For Ph.D. in fisheries, a nationwide competitive exam is held and for the rest of the Ph.D. courses, a written test for that subject matter is conducted prior to the interview. Multiple well-known private sector companies such as Godrej, CP, Avanti, etc conduct interviews every year.

 There will be an All India Competitive Written Test for admission to the Ph.D. course in Fisheries. Those who meet the minimum qualifying criteria will be allowed to take the Entrance Examination. Before the interview, a written test covering the subject matter will be administered to assess the candidate's understanding of the discipline to which admission is sought.
