International Institute for Population Science (IIPS), Mumbai was established with the joint sponsorship of Dorabji Tata Trust, the government of India, and the United Nation in 1956. It was known as Demographic Training Research until 1970. It received the deemed-to-be university status on 14 August 1985 under section 3 of the UGC Act by the MHRD Government of India.
