UPRTOU PhD Admission Dates 2026

UPRTOU conducts most UG and PG admissions through online applications without a university entrance test. B.Ed, B.Ed Special Education, and PhD admissions follow entrance-based routes. The ongoing PhD schedule for 2026 is given below.

UPRTOU Courses and Fees

UPRTOU offers 130+ programmes at Certificate, Diploma, UG, PG, and Doctoral levels through distance learning. Its fees are kept affordable for working professionals, rural learners, and students who need flexible study options.

Students also pay an examination fee of INR 150 to 200 per paper per semester. Science and computer programmes may include practical or lab fees of INR 200 to 500 per subject. BA has the highest enrolment and includes more than a dozen humanities and social science specialisations. MA is available in History, Hindi, English, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Sanskrit, Geography, Psychology, and Home Science.

UPRTOU Admission Process

UPRTOU admits most students through merit in the last qualifying examination. A separate university entrance test is used for B.Ed, B.Ed Special Education, and PhD. For general programmes, the application fee is INR 500, while entrance-based programmes carry an application fee of INR 1,000.

UG Programme Admission (BA, B.Com, B.Sc, BCA, BBA)

For most UG courses, students are selected through their qualifying marks and do not need to take a university-level entrance exam. A 10+2 pass certificate from a recognised board is the basic requirement.

At the time of admission, students select a regional study centre. These centres conduct periodic Personal Contact Programme (PCP) sessions, and term-end examinations are held at assigned exam centres.

B.Ed Admission

Admission to B.Ed at UPRTOU is based on the entrance test. Applicants need a graduation degree with teaching subjects and at least 50% marks. For SC/ST/OBC candidates, the required score is 45%. The entrance process is run through entrance.uprtouexam.in.

Most PG courses do not have an entrance test. MA, M.Com, and M.Sc require graduation in the relevant subject with 40% to 50% marks, depending on the programme. MBA accepts graduates from any stream with 50% marks. MCA applicants must have studied Mathematics as a subject during graduation.

PhD Admission

UPRTOU conducts PhD admission through an entrance-based process. Applicants must hold a PG degree with 55% marks, while SC/ST/PwD candidates need 50% marks. The PhD entrance test is conducted separately through uprtouphd.co.in. After qualifying, students are allotted a research supervisor from the university faculty pool. Research work is done in ODL mode, with regular meetings with the supervisor.

UPRTOU Rankings

UPRTOU Study Centres and Infrastructure

UPRTOU's main administrative campus is in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. As a distance education university, it does not offer residential campus life. Instead, it supports students through regional study centres and exam centres across Uttar Pradesh. These centres are available in Lucknow, Varanasi, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Jhansi, Agra, and many other districts, so students can attend contact sessions and examinations without shifting to Prayagraj.

After admission, printed study material is sent by post. Students also use SWAYAM, India's national MOOCs platform, for digital learning support. Through SWAYAM, they can access video lectures, e-content, and online quizzes connected with the UPRTOU curriculum. The university portal is used for applications, fee payment, examination registration, and results.

Term-end examinations are held at recognised exam centres linked to the student's study centre. Practical work for science and computer programmes is arranged at selected study centres under faculty supervision. For help and complaints, the university has a welfare and grievance cell at its main campus in Prayagraj.

UPRTOU vs IGNOU vs VMOU

Students looking for distance education in northern India often compare UPRTOU with IGNOU, which is Indira Gandhi National Open University, and VMOU Kota, which is Vardhman Mahaveer Open University. All three are UGC-recognised open universities with affordable ODL programmes. They differ mainly in scale, state or national reach, NIRF position, and university type.

IGNOU has a larger national network, wider programme list, stronger national name value, NAAC A grade, and NIRF Rank 1 among open universities.
