KTU Admission Process

Admission rules depend on the programme and entrance test. CEE Kerala manages the central allotment used for undergraduate engineering and architecture seats, while postgraduate and research selection follows programme-specific requirements.

B.Tech Admission

CEE Kerala conducts admission to B.Tech courses at KTU-affiliated engineering colleges. Seats are divided into two quota groups:

  • State Merit Quota, 85%: Selection follows the KEAM rank. Applicants need at least 45% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 10+2 from a recognised board.
  • All-India Quota, 15%: Applicants from anywhere in India compete on merit through their JEE Main ranks.

The Centralised Allotment Process has the following stages:

  1. Appear for KEAM.
  2. Check the published rank list.
  3. Register course and college options online.
  4. Review the provisional allotment.
  5. Complete document verification.
  6. Confirm final admission.

For General Category B.Tech seats at leading government colleges under KTU, admission commonly needs a KEAM rank within the top 5,000 to 15,000. The required rank changes with the college and specialisation.

B.Arch Admission

Applicants need valid scores in both KEAM Architecture and NATA. They must also have completed 10+2 with at least 50% in Mathematics. CEE Kerala assigns B.Arch seats through the same CAP system used for B.Tech.

MBA Admission

KTU-affiliated management colleges consider KMAT Kerala, CAT, CMAT, MAT, and XAT scores. A graduation degree with at least 50% aggregate is required, while SC/ST applicants need 45%. After entrance-test shortlisting, individual colleges generally hold a group discussion and personal interview.

M.Tech and MCA Admission

M.Tech applicants must have a B.Tech or BE degree from a recognised university and a valid GATE score in the related engineering field. MCA selection uses KMAT Kerala or NIMCET results. For MCA eligibility, Mathematics must have been studied either in 10+2 or during graduation.

Ph.D Admission

Each KTU-affiliated research institution runs its own Ph.D selection. An applicant must hold a postgraduate degree and a valid NET or GATE score, then complete the institute's entrance test and interview. Research options cover the main engineering and technology fields along with management studies.

KTU Placements

Each affiliated college manages its own placement work because the university headquarters does not operate a central placement cell. Results differ considerably among the 170+ institutions. Government engineering colleges in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kottayam record the strongest outcomes.

IT and software services companies recruit the largest share of students across the KTU network, reflecting Kerala's position in technology education. Colleges located in industrial areas and having strong links with industry attract more core engineering and manufacturing opportunities.

During recent placement seasons, graduates of the leading government engineering colleges in the network secured top packages between INR 15 and 25 LPA, mainly from major IT employers. Average placement figures differ widely across colleges and disciplines.

KTU Scholarships

Eligible students studying at KTU-affiliated colleges can seek financial support through central and Kerala government schemes.

KTU Campus and Infrastructure

KTU's administrative headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram acts as the university's regulatory and academic centre. It oversees examinations, curriculum development, and college affiliations across more than 170 colleges in Kerala's 14 districts.

Infrastructure differs by affiliated college. The network includes established government engineering colleges with research laboratories, hostels, and sports facilities, as well as newer private self-financing institutions. The Government of Kerala approved an annual operating budget of INR 372 Crore for KTU in 2026-27 to fund its academic and regulatory responsibilities.

KTU vs Anna University vs JNTU Hyderabad

KTU, Anna University, and JNTU Hyderabad are large state-level affiliating technological universities in South India. Each has an important role in managing engineering and technical education in its state.

KTU has the highest number of students per affiliated college among these three universities, showing that its newer network is more compact. Anna University has operated for more than four decades and holds a stronger NIRF position. JNTU Hyderabad gains from its location near Hyderabad's IT industry, which supports larger placement volumes across its colleges. Since KTU was founded more recently, its curriculum framework was revised and modernised in line with current industry needs.

KTU FAQs

Ques. What kind of university is KTU, and how large is its affiliated network?

Ans. APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) is a state public technological university set up by the Government of Kerala in 2014. More than 170 colleges offering engineering, management, architecture, and pharmacy programmes are affiliated with it across Kerala's 14 districts. Students study at these colleges rather than at KTU directly and receive a KTU degree after graduating.

Ques. How much does the complete B.Tech programme cost at a government college under KTU?

Ans. Government and government-aided colleges affiliated with KTU charge a total of INR 3 Lakhs for the four-year B.Tech course, equal to INR 75,000 each year. Fees at private self-financing colleges are higher and vary by institution and specialisation within the limits allowed by the Kerala Government fee regulatory committee.

Ques. Which steps are followed for KTU B.Tech seat allotment?

Ans. CEE Kerala assigns B.Tech seats through the Centralised Allotment Process. KEAM ranks fill 85% of the seats, while JEE Main ranks are used for the remaining 15%. Applicants register online, provide their KEAM or JEE Main scores, and enter their preferred colleges and courses. The final allotment considers rank, category, and the choices submitted.

Ques. Is APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University included in the NIRF University rankings?

Ans. KTU does not currently appear in the NIRF University rankings. It is an affiliating university whose first batch began in 2015-16. Several KTU-affiliated institutions, particularly the National Institutes of Technology and IIT campuses in Kerala, take part separately in NIRF under the Engineering or Institute categories.

Ques. Which entrance tests and selection stages apply to an MBA under KTU?

Ans. KTU-affiliated management colleges accept KMAT Kerala, CAT, CMAT, MAT, and XAT scores. Applicants need at least 50% aggregate in graduation. Individual colleges shortlist students using their entrance-test results and then hold group discussions and personal interviews. KMAT Kerala is accepted most widely across the KTU system.

Ques. Which financial-aid schemes can KTU-affiliated college students use?

Ans. The Central Sector Scholarship, available through the National Scholarship Portal, pays eligible UG students INR 1,000 per month when annual family income is below INR 4.5 Lakhs. Kerala's E-Grantz scheme provides tuition support and maintenance assistance to SC, ST, and OBC students. SC/ST students with family income below INR 2.5 Lakhs per annum may also apply for the Post-Matric Scholarship.
