The expected 2027-28 application period runs from June to September 2027. For the 2026-27 session, the document verification and admission window extends through October, while session commencement falls within October to November.

UOC-SDE Courses and Fees

Students can choose from 25 programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These cover arts, commerce, management and science. Open and distance learning removes the need to attend daily classroom lessons. Each fee below covers the complete course duration.

For most BA courses, the first-year payment combines annual tuition of INR 1,890 with a one-time registration and study material charge of INR 1,620. This makes the first-year fee INR 3,510. Only the annual tuition applies from the second year. BBA charges are higher than those for BA and B.Com because of its management-focused curriculum.

UOC-SDE Admission Process

Marks in the qualifying examination determine admission to UOC-SDE courses. No programme requires an entrance test. Students apply through the university’s online portal, and admission follows document verification.

Undergraduate Eligibility and Application Steps

For BA, B.Com, BBA and B.Sc admission, students must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination through a recognised board. Most humanities and commerce courses do not set a minimum percentage requirement. B.Sc Mathematics applicants must have studied Mathematics in Class 12.

Complete the undergraduate application in this order:

• First, create a registration on the UOC-SDE admission portal.
• Next, upload the qualifying examination mark sheet, proof of identity and a photograph.
• Pay the applicable fee using the online payment gateway.
• Receive confirmation of admission from the SDE office.
• Complete enrolment with the nearest Study Centre.

Working professionals, homemakers and ex-servicemen may apply, as may students above the minimum age of 17 years. None of the programmes has an upper age limit.

Postgraduate Eligibility and Application Steps

A bachelor’s degree in the relevant or an allied subject from a UGC-recognised university is needed for postgraduate entry. Applicants for MA Arabic, History and Malayalam must have passed the relevant language subject at undergraduate level. Mathematics must be the main subject of the bachelor’s degree for M.Sc Mathematics, while M.Com accepts B.Com or an equivalent commerce qualification.

Postgraduate applicants follow the same sequence as undergraduate applicants: submit the online form, upload documents, pay fees and enrol at a Study Centre after admission confirmation. The annual September admission window applies to both levels.

Returning Students and Lateral Entry

Students who left a course before completing it may seek re-admission. Those who have already completed some years of study at a recognised university can request lateral consideration. The current University of Calicut SDE ordinance sets the conditions for re-admission and decides whether earlier coursework is equivalent.

UOC-SDE Career Outcomes

Campus recruitment is not conducted by UOC-SDE. Its learners include professionals adding to their qualifications, homemakers completing degrees and recent Class 12 passouts who could not secure regular college seats. Employment prospects depend on each student’s earlier qualifications, independently gained work or internship experience, and chosen sector.

BA, B.Com and BBA graduates commonly look for starting roles in banking, insurance, government services, retail and teaching. A distance B.Com or BBA from the University of Calicut is recognised for government job eligibility and bank probationary officer recruitment through IBPS and SBI. MA graduates often prepare for KPSC, UGC NET and Staff Selection examinations, enter BEd courses or seek teaching posts in schools. M.Sc Mathematics graduates may pursue government teaching posts or SSC CGL recruitment. Further certification can also support entry into actuarial work or data science.

UGC rules on equivalence give recognised open and distance learning degrees the same academic status as conventional degrees for employment and further education. This applies to University of Calicut degrees earned through distance study as well as regular study.

UOC-SDE Study Centres and Student Support

University-authorised Study Centres cover Kerala’s major districts, with centres across all districts and selected locations in Gulf countries. The overseas centres also serve non-resident Keralites. Students can attend contact classes, usually at weekends, and receive practical support through these centres. They also handle internal assessment submissions, examination registration and document verification during admission.

For questions about study materials, learners can contact the SDE office in Calicut or use the university’s web centre and helpline. A reference collection is available in the library at the main SDE campus for students visiting Calicut. Hostel accommodation is not available. Since teaching support is delivered through the Study Centre network, students do not have to live in Calicut to complete a course.

UOC-SDE Scholarships

The School does not fund its own merit-based or need-based scholarships. Eligible enrolled students can instead seek assistance through central government schemes and Kerala’s Post-Matric Scholarship.

UOC-SDE, IGNOU and Kerala University IDE Compared

For undergraduate or postgraduate distance study in Kerala, common choices include UOC-SDE, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Kerala University’s Institute of Distance Education (IDE). Fees, course choice, location and language support are among the factors students compare.

IGNOU’s larger range suits students seeking specialised or professional courses unavailable at UOC-SDE. Local employers and state government bodies in Kerala prefer UOC-SDE and Kerala University IDE, which also have stronger regional language offerings. The two state university distance education units provide equivalent degree status for most employment and recruitment purposes.
