UPESDAT 2027 applications are open for B.Des and M.Des admission at UPES, Dehradun. Both entrance papers have 40 questions and a one-hour duration, but the subjects differ: B.Des has Visual Analogy and Design and General Awareness, while M.Des also includes Quantitative questions.
Admission includes a portfolio presentation and interview after the entrance or an accepted non-exam route. B.Des applicants need at least 50% each in Class X and XII. M.Des applicants also need at least 50% in their bachelor degree.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Choose degree | B.Des after Class XII or M.Des after an eligible bachelor degree |
| Choose admission route | UPESDAT or an applicable national-exam/board-merit route |
| Complete application | Submit the requested personal and qualification details |
| Pay application fee | INR 1,750 |
| Save records | Application number, payment confirmation and registered contact details |
Applications are open for 2027-28. Keep access to the registered mobile number and email until selection is over. UPES sends the actual test passkey there, not through a separate practice-test login.
| Degree | Eligibility condition |
|---|---|
| B.Des | 50% in Class X and 50% in Class XII; any stream |
| M.Des | 50% each in Class X, Class XII and a bachelor degree in any stream under the 10+2+3 route |
| M.Des preferred qualifications | B.Des, B.Arch, B.Tech and BFA; preference does not exclude other eligible graduates |
| Degree | Alternative to UPESDAT |
|---|---|
| B.Des | NID / NIFT / UCEED / JEE Main / CUET-UG / board merit |
| M.Des | CEED / NID / NIFT |
Portfolio and interview still apply. The 50% academic rule does not itself establish a board-merit exemption, and the 2027 minimum entrance scores are not finalised.
Compare the degree-level routes: UCEED for B.Des and CEED for M.Des.
| Section | B.Des questions | M.Des questions |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Analogy | 20 | 15 |
| Design and General Awareness | 20 | 15 |
| Quantitative | - | 10 |
| Total questions | 40 | 40 |
| Duration | 1 hour | 1 hour |
B.Des: two equal 20-question sections. M.Des: two 15-question sections and 10 Quantitative questions. Practise the mix for your degree, not a single shared design paper.
The 2026 guide had no negative marking. The current pattern does not state a marks-per-answer formula; question distribution is the useful comparison here.
| Section | Practice focus |
|---|---|
| Visual Analogy | Compare how shape, position, direction or number changes between figures. Identify the rule before choosing a matching figure. |
| Design and General Awareness | Study a familiar product, sign or package: its user, purpose, materials and visual choices. Connect design examples with the problem they solve. |
| Quantitative: M.Des only | Practise basic numerical reasoning, ratios, percentages and short calculations alongside visual questions. These are practice suggestions, not a published chapter list. |
Timed rehearsal: 40 questions in 60 minutes. Review whether each error came from a visual rule, calculation or unfamiliar design information. Use that distinction to choose the next practice task.
Keep a separate portfolio folder for scans, original photographs, digital work and project drafts. Written-test preparation does not replace work for the interview.

| Offline work | Examples |
|---|---|
| Hand-drawn work | Sketches or renderings using pencil, coloured pencil, markers, charcoal, natural dyes or other media |
| Photography or digital work | Your original photographs or 2D/3D digital drawings, sketches and renderings |
| Physical models or prototypes | Work in clay, plastic, wood, cardboard or other materials |
| Other creative work | Additional work showing your skills, interests and originality |
| Certificates and achievements | Competition certificates or recognition, including school/class-level achievements, if applicable |
Use a PDF or PPT through Microsoft Teams. Include scanned hand-drawn work, original photographs or 2D/3D digital work, and scanned certificates if applicable.
For each project: explain the purpose, show how it developed, and identify the decision or change you made. For group work, distinguish your contribution. Competition certificates support the work; they are not a substitute for it.
Selection sequence: entrance test or accepted alternative route, portfolio presentation and interview, selection communication, then the required admission formalities. Use the allotted slot and instructions for the interview.
| B.Des record | Document |
|---|---|
| Offer | UPES offer letter |
| Identity | Aadhaar Card |
| School records | Class X and XII marksheets and certificates |
| Transfer | Migration/Transfer Certificate |
| Photographs | Two recent stamp-size photographs, signed on the back |
| Hostel applicants | Student PAN Card, mandatory when opting for hostel accommodation |
| Non-exam route | Applicable qualifying entrance scorecard or board-merit records |
M.Des: keep original academic records for Class X, XII and graduation, Aadhaar/PAN details and the applicable national entrance score. UPES also asks for parental PAN details in its M.Des admission information.
Confirm the programme and the payment deadline in the offer. A test score alone does not complete admission.
Teaching Assistantship: up to INR 3,000. The published conditions are:
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Academic performance | SGPA/CGPA of at least 8.5 in the first and subsequent semesters/year |
| First-attempt passes | Pass every semester without supplementary or improvement examinations |
| Attendance | At least 75% throughout the semester |
| Discipline | No disciplinary action initiated or awarded |
| Conduct | Exemplary behaviour and compliance with university norms |
| Other funding | No other fellowship, scholarship, fee waiver or financial assistance from a public or private source |
Do not combine this amount with another scholarship or fee waiver in your budget unless the award terms permit it. The published notice does not state a payment frequency.
The published B.Des requirement is at least 50% in each of the two classes. A higher Class XII percentage does not cancel the Class X shortfall. M.Des also checks school-level marks separately from graduation marks.
The academic rule accepts a bachelor degree in any stream under the 10+2+3 route, with at least 50%, along with 50% each in Class X and XII. B.Des, B.Arch, B.Tech and BFA are preferred, not the only eligible degrees. A non-design graduate still needs a suitable admission route and a portfolio. Use the portfolio to show actual creative work and explain why the selected design field fits your interests.
No. UCEED is an alternative entrance route for B.Des, but portfolio presentation and interview remain part of UPES selection. The applicable 2027 exemption threshold also needs confirmation; merely having appeared for UCEED does not guarantee exemption or admission.
No. UPES sends the actual passkey one day before the examination to the registered email address and mobile number. Use the actual test message and link, not credentials saved from a demo.
Certificates are included if applicable. They are not a compulsory replacement for creative work. You can present your own sketches, photographs, digital work or models and explain how you made them. The important distinction is whether you can discuss the purpose, development and your contribution to the work.
The online portfolio format is PDF or PPT presented through Microsoft Teams. Clear photographs can help explain a model you made, alongside sketches and details of its development. The official online categories cover scanned hand-drawn work, original photography or digital work and certificates if applicable; the offline list separately includes physical models. Follow any additional presentation instructions attached to your interview slot.
The published conditions exclude students receiving another fellowship, scholarship, fee waiver or financial assistance from a public or private source. The assistantship also requires at least 8.5 SGPA/CGPA, 75% attendance, first-attempt passes without supplementary or improvement exams, no disciplinary action and compliance with university conduct rules. Admission alone does not establish entitlement to the award.
