IIT Roorkee Admission Dates 2026

IIT Roorkee uses different entrance exams for different courses. B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Des, M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA, and Ph.D admissions follow national-level exams, counselling, or institute-level selection as required by the programme.

IIT Roorkee Courses and Fees

IIT Roorkee runs UG, PG, and doctoral programmes through 25 academic departments in Engineering, Architecture, Design, Science, Management, and Humanities. The government-set IIT fee structure applies to its courses. B.Tech costs INR 11.33 Lakhs for 4 years, while GATE-based M.Tech and many science programmes have lower fees.

Data Science and AI is one of the newer B.Tech specialisations and usually draws some of the best JEE Advanced ranks. The Architecture department offers B.Arch, M.Arch, M.Planning, and Ph.D, and it is ranked first by NIRF in Architecture. The Department of Management Studies offers the MBA and the Masters in Innovation Management (MIM).

IIT Roorkee Admission Process

IIT Roorkee admission is entrance-based for most courses. UG seats are mostly allotted through JoSAA after national entrance exams, while PG and doctoral admissions use exams such as GATE, JAM, CAT, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, or IIT Roorkee’s own selection process.

B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Des Admission

B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Des are the main UG programmes at IITR. Seat allotment happens through JoSAA after the required entrance test result.

• B.Tech and Dual Degree seats are allotted through JoSAA based on JEE Advanced rank.
• B.Arch admission needs JEE Advanced and AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) clearance.
• B.Des admission is through UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design) and JoSAA.
• SC/ST students get 15% and 7.5% horizontal reservation respectively, with relaxed rank bands.
• OBC-NCL students get 27% horizontal reservation with standard relaxation.

For the General category in JoSAA 2025, IIT Roorkee CSE closed at 592. ECE closed in the 2,300 to 3,000 range, Electrical Engineering in the 3,000 to 4,500 range, and Civil Engineering in the 6,000 to 9,000 range. Data Science and AI usually needs a rank in the 600 to 1,200 range. Cutoffs change each year as the applicant pool changes.

M.Tech Admission

M.Tech admission needs a valid GATE score in the correct paper. The process is handled through CCMT (Centralised Counselling for M.Tech) or the IITR admission portal. Applicants must have a B.Tech or BE degree with 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5. Sponsored and Institute-funded research roles may also allow direct conversion to Ph.D.

MBA Admission

The 2-year MBA offered by the Department of Management Studies accepts CAT scores. IITR first shortlists students through CAT score screening and then conducts Group Discussion and Personal Interview. The minimum eligibility is graduation with 60% aggregate or 6.5 CGPA.

M.Sc Admission

M.Sc seats in Applied Geology, Biosciences, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biotechnology, and related subjects are filled through JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc). Applicants need a bachelor’s degree in a relevant science subject with 55% marks. The minimum is 50% for SC/ST/PWD students.

Ph.D Admission

Ph.D applicants need a valid GATE, UGC-NET, or CSIR-NET score. Direct admission after B.Tech may be available in some cases for students with an exceptional CGPA. Admission is also possible after M.Tech or M.Sc. IITR usually conducts Ph.D admission twice a year, in January and July, through a written test and interview.

IIT Roorkee Placements

IIT Roorkee placements are managed by the Training and Placement Office for graduating students. In the 2025 placement season, the institute recorded an overall B.Tech average package of INR 24.96 LPA and a placement rate of 80%. The highest offer was INR 2.05 Crore per annum, an international role received by a Computer Science student.

CSE had the strongest branch outcome, with an average package of INR 34.05 LPA and a placement rate of 99.07%. ECE averaged INR 30.81 LPA, Electrical Engineering averaged INR 28.36 LPA, and Civil Engineering averaged INR 16.62 LPA. In Phase 1 of the 2026 placement season, students received more than 500 offers in the first two days, including 8 international offers.

Recruiters at IIT Roorkee include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, D.E. Shaw, Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Bain and Company, McKinsey, Deloitte, Tata Motors, ONGC, and DRDO. Along with core IT roles, finance, consulting, and product management roles have increased in recent placement cycles.

IIT Roorkee Rankings

IIT Roorkee is placed in the top 10 in three NIRF 2025 categories. Architecture and Planning holds the top rank in India, while Engineering and Overall rankings also place IITR among the country’s leading higher education institutions.

The Architecture and Planning score of 83.95 includes strong research and professional practice performance, with RPC at 95.65, and strong graduation outcomes, with GO at 89.28. In Engineering, the score of 75.44 reflects performance in teaching, research publications, graduate employment, and outreach. IITR also appears in the QS World University Rankings and QS Asia University Rankings.

IIT Roorkee Scholarships

IIT Roorkee follows the Government of India fee waiver rules for IITs. Students get these waivers after document verification during admission and in later years as required.

Students must submit income proof for the current assessment year to receive income-based waivers. SC/ST and PWD tuition waivers do not depend on income. Students cannot combine multiple waivers. Hostel and mess charges must be paid by all students, even if they receive a tuition waiver.

IIT Roorkee Campus and Infrastructure

IIT Roorkee’s main campus spreads across 365 acres in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. It has 25 academic departments and several interdisciplinary research centres, including the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre, the National Centre for Hydrology and Flood Studies, and the Alternate Hydro Energy Centre.

The academic setup includes department laboratories, the James Thomason Library as the central library, computer centres, a wind tunnel facility, a hydraulics lab, and high-performance computing clusters. Some heritage buildings from the old College of Engineering are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, which gives the campus a historic identity among IITs.

The residential and student facilities include more than 20 hostels, faculty and staff quarters, a shopping complex, a hospital, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a cricket ground, a football ground, and a student activity centre. Roorkee railway station, an important stop on the Delhi-Haridwar rail route, connects the campus to nearby cities.

IIT Roorkee vs IIT Delhi vs IIT Kharagpur

Students choosing IIT Roorkee often compare it with IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur. All three are Institutes of National Importance under the IITs Act and use JoSAA for B.Tech admission. Their differences are mainly in NIRF rank, location, branch cutoffs, campus size, and subject strengths.

IIT Delhi has a stronger NIRF Overall rank and a stronger CSE brand, and its Delhi location helps students seeking finance and consulting roles. IIT Kharagpur is the first institution to receive the IIT designation, has the largest campus among the three, and offers a wide range of departments, including a law school and medical department. IIT Roorkee stands out for its NIRF #1 Architecture programme, heritage campus, and strong base in civil and water resources engineering. For JEE Advanced ranks in the 400 to 1,500 range, IITR CSE is the most accessible among these three options.
