What Is UCEED?

UCEED stands for Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design. IIT Bombay conducts it for admission to Bachelor of Design programmes at the participating institutes. It tests visual reasoning, observation, analytical ability, drawing and practical design responses.

UCEED and CEED are different examinations. UCEED is the undergraduate route; CEED is used for postgraduate design admission. A college that accepts a UCEED score independently is not necessarily part of the seven-institute joint seat-allotment process.

UCEED 2027 Important Dates

The joint BDes application window is 15 March to 12 April 2027. Five tentative seat-allotment announcements are scheduled for 21 April, 19 May, 14 June, 25 June and 9 July. These admission rounds are separate from examination registration.

UCEED Eligibility 2027

All applicants must satisfy the age, attempt and qualifying-examination conditions together. For the normal route, the first Class 12 or equivalent appearance must be in 2026 or 2027. UCEED permits two attempts in consecutive years.

A first appearance in 2025 or earlier normally makes a candidate ineligible. The narrow exam exception is for a Board that declared its 2024-25 results on or after 30 September 2025; an individually withheld result does not qualify. This exception concerns taking the exam, not an automatic waiver of the separate BDes admission rules.

Recognised equivalent routes include NIOS Senior Secondary with at least five subjects and an approved diploma of at least three years. Foreign or unlisted Boards need the applicable equivalence certification. A diploma meeting the entrance-exam rule still requires acceptance by the admitting institute.

Which Class 12 subjects do institutes accept?

PCM students can apply to all seven institutes. Arts and Commerce students can apply to IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore. IIITDM Jabalpur specifically accepts Physics and Chemistry with Mathematics or Biology. Admission also requires the relevant UCEED rank and qualifying-examination conditions.

Candidates appearing for Class 12 in 2027 must complete the final-examination requirements within the admission rules and provide passing proof to the admitting institute by 30 September 2027.

UCEED Registration and Application Fee

Register through the UCEED 2027 candidate portal, enter your details, select three exam cities in order, upload the required documents and pay the applicable fee. An incomplete form is not a valid registration. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

The foreign-national fee route includes OCI/PIO cards issued on or after 4 March 2021. Bank charges are additional. After 31 October, the extra late fee is INR 500 for Indian nationals and eligible earlier OCI/PIO cardholders, or USD 50 payable in INR for the foreign-national route.

OBC-NCL/EWS certificates for the examination must be issued on or after 1 April 2026. Admission in 2027-28 requires certificates issued on or after 1 April 2027. These are separate stage-specific requirements, not interchangeable dates.

Request scribe assistance or compensatory time during registration with the required disability documents. Approved scribe assistance is restricted to Part A; Part B must be completed independently.

UCEED Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The paper carries 300 marks. Part A lasts two hours and carries 200 marks. Part B lasts one hour and carries 100 marks. Both parts are compulsory; the time allotted to one part cannot be used as extra time for the other.

NAT answers are entered as numbers without answer options. MSQs may have more than one correct choice. MCQs have exactly one correct choice. Unanswered Part-A questions score zero.

MSQ partial marking

For example, if A, C and D are correct, choosing A and C earns +2. Adding the incorrect option B earns -1, even though two other selected options are correct. Part B is evaluated subjectively, so it does not use this objective-answer formula.

UCEED Syllabus 2027

The syllabus gives skill areas rather than a fixed chapter-wise marks distribution. A visual question may combine geometry, observation and reasoning, so assigning every question to only one chapter can be misleading.

Part B goes beyond neat drawing. A response must follow the given situation and consider the person using the proposed design. The sketch, views and labels should make the intended use clear.

How to Prepare for UCEED 2027

Use UCEED previous-year papers to practise the question formats. Recent papers are better for a timed attempt with the current two-hour Part A and one-hour Part B. Earlier papers can supply extra questions, but their counts and marking rules differ.

• For spatial questions, draw the intermediate rotation, fold or view before choosing an option. This makes it easier to identify where your visualisation changed incorrectly.
• For MSQs, judge each option separately and record the complete selected set. A single wrong addition can turn partial credit into a penalty.
• For drawing, begin with the required viewpoint and main objects. Check relative scale before adding fine details.
• For design aptitude, show the requested states or views and explain useful features with short labels. A product must satisfy the brief as well as look coherent.
• Keep Part-A and Part-B practice timed separately. Finishing one part early does not create extra time for the other.

UCEED Admit Card and Exam Centres

UCEED 2027 has 30 examination cities in India. Applicants choose three in order of preference, but allocation can differ for operational reasons. A city-change request is not accepted after registration is complete.

Admit cards become available on 1 January 2027 at 1 pm. The card gives the allotted venue and examination instructions. Report discrepancies by 8 January, 5 pm; this is not a city-change window.

• Report from 7 am on 17 January with a printed admit card and valid original photo ID.
• Entry after the 9 am start is not permitted, and candidates stay for the full examination.
• Bring your own pencils in a transparent packet; black shades are allowed. A clean A4 writing board is permitted.
• Colouring materials, geometry boxes, electronic devices and watches of any type are not permitted.
• Return the signed scribble pad supplied for rough work. Drawing stationery is not supplied by the centre.

Eligible candidates using a scribe choose from the centre-provided panel, usually a day before the exam; they cannot bring a personal scribe. Approved compensatory time is 20 minutes per hour for each part and cannot be transferred between them.

UCEED Answer Key, Result and Qualifying Marks

The draft Part-A key and responses are scheduled for 19 January 2027, with comments due by 21 January at 5 pm. The final key is scheduled for 26 January at 5 pm. Download your Part-A responses before result declaration, when response access is disabled.

Part-A shortlisting is announced on 4 February. The starting OPEN measure is the mean Part-A score plus half its standard deviation. OBC-NCL/EWS uses 0.9 times that measure and SC/ST/PwD uses 0.5 times. If more than 6,400 candidates meet the measures, the top-6,400 rule applies with those category relationships; ties at the boundary can increase the final shortlist slightly.

Only shortlisted candidates have Part B evaluated, and they must clear the Part-B minimum to qualify. Final ranks use Part A plus Part B. Ties are resolved by higher Part-B marks, then Part-A Section 2, then Part-A Section 1; a remaining tie receives the same rank.

Results are scheduled for 6 March 2027. Scorecards can be downloaded from 10 March to 31 July. A Part-A scorecard does not itself mean qualification. Re-evaluation, re-grading and re-totalling are not available for either part.

UCEED BDes Counselling and Seats

Apply separately for joint BDes admission between 15 March and 12 April 2027. Rank, category, institute preferences and available seats determine allotment. Institute choices can be edited until the application closes; they become final after that deadline.

The latest published seat matrix is for 2026-27. It lists 245 seats across the seven institutes; the final 2027-28 matrix is not yet available.

Reservation is 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST. PwD reservation is 5% horizontally within categories, not an additional block to add to the total.

Seat acceptance costs INR 65,000 for GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL and INR 20,000 for SC/ST/PwD, including an INR 5,000 processing charge. Pay by the assigned round's deadline; non-payment cancels the seat and further-round participation.

Freeze accepts the allotted institute without further upgrade consideration. Float accepts it while retaining consideration for a higher listed preference. An upgrade automatically replaces the earlier seat, and the acceptance fee is not paid again. First-preference offers can be frozen or declined, not floated.

Scheduled withdrawal windows run through 7 July 2027, 6 pm. The applicable refund is INR 60,000 or INR 15,000 after the processing charge. After the final round is announced, candidates cannot withdraw or decline an accepted/allotted seat through the joint process.
