A dynamic two-day international conference on “Rethinking Education in the Age of AI” was hosted by Chitkara University in collaboration with the European Union. Several representatives from the leading universities from India and Europe were present with policymakers from both regions to discuss the pivotal role of education and international collaborations in reshaping societal skills and talents in response to advancing technologies.
The EDUREFORM meticulously organised the conference under a capacity-building project and generously co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union that deliberates on the socio-economic impact of emerging technologies. The discussion focuses on the enhancements in study programmes and vocational training, particularly on actively involving Indian pre-service and in-service teachers. Various dynamic educational institutes took part in the conference, bringing forth a rich tapestry of perspectives.
Notable participating Institutions were Unison International School, Chitkara University, Chitkara College of Pharmacy, Chitkara International School, Holy Angels School, Chandigarh Baptist School, Adharshila The Foundation International School, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Public School, Cambridge Innovative School, The Millennium School, Angels Valley School, The Mukat Trust International School, SPPU, Bhusawal Arts and Science College, Sinhgad Institute of Management, Freelance Management Consultant and Visiting Faculty, and Punjab University. A depth and variety to the collective discourse, creating an environment ripe for shared learning and collaboration was added by the diverse representation from these esteemed institutions In addition to this, a spirited poster-making competition was organized on the topic, “Re-thinking Education in the Age of AI” as an integral part of the international event. Drawing enthusiast participants eagerly showcased their creativity and insights.
The first day of the conference commenced with an elegant official opening and lamp-lighting ceremony. Prof. Dr. Vijay Kumar Srivastava Massimiliano Bizzocchi. Prof. Dr. Sangeeta Pant and Prof. Dr. Archana Mantri presented the noteworthy achievements and results of the Erasmus+ EDUREFORM project. They address the profound impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on Indian society. The launch of the Indian-European Alliance for Education and a special issue dedicated to rethinking education in the age of AI marked significant milestones. Engrossing panel discussions skillfully navigated the role of schools and international cooperation in re-thinking education.
The second day of the conference started with four distinct tracks led by eminent scholars, encompassing teaching pedagogies, technology in education, applied education, and innovation in education. Indian and European scholars and faculty presented their meticulously crafted research papers, contributing to a vibrant exploration of pivotal themes in education. Furthermore, Dr. Swaroop Sampat Rawal’s subsequent expert talk resonated with intellectual vigour and profound insights in a book event.
The launch was hosted as part of the EDUREFORM International Conference. Dr. Sampat, a well-known public figure shared her life-transforming journey experience from the world of glamour to the forefront of education. In 1979, she was crowned Femina Miss India Universe, she had a successful acting career that included acclaimed performances in “Naram Garam” and “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi,” later on switched to become a passionate advocate for education. With a PhD in Education and a Doctor of Letters from the United Kingdom. She also contributed to shaping the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and in 2019, she was recognized as one of the top ten teachers for the Global Teacher Prize.
Dr. Sampat has collaborations with UNICEF, she is committed to holistic education development and helped in crafting the curriculum for Art Education. Her journey showcases the transformative power of education that embodies the seamless fusion of glamour and academia. At the launch event Dr. Sampat’s book, a magnum opus titled “Play Practice Pursue” was the centre of attraction. She unreviled the essence of her work with her mesmerising presentation that pleased the audience. Then, Dr Sampat responded to an array of brainstorming questions. She illuminated her extraordinary journey from the entertainment industry to education, citing a pivotal realisation that spurred this transition. She Emphasises the need for “out-of-the-ordinary teachers,” she discusses about the qualities an educator must possess and their role in shaping the next generation.
Dr. Swaroop Sampat eloquently shared insights for teachers as “agents of curiosity” and promoters of a “search for the ‘why’ things.” During the audience Q&A, a standout moment unfolded, when a participant asked a question regarding the intersection of technology and education, specifically in the context of artificial intelligence. Dr. Swaroop Sampat shared her view that transcended the technical aspects, delving into the humanistic dimensions of education in the age of AI. The day culminated with a contemplative address on the future impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, coupled with reflections on transitioning from mere capacity-building to the realm of joint research and awareness activities.
Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Pro-Chancellor of Chitkara University, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh shared her views on underscoring the transformative role of education in the ongoing technological transition, articulating. furthermore, she added “The introduction of artificial intelligence and robotics in the manufacturing and service sectors is expected to metamorphose the skills required in the labour market. Education must play a substantial role in supporting Indian governmental and private entities through this technological transition.”
The Indian-European Alliance was also launched officially at the conference and aims to create a shared platform for an international cluster of experts to collaboratively develop initiatives that enhance the societal and developmental impact of higher education. In addition to these fruitful activities, a discussion and poster-making competition which was actively participated by the representatives, aimed to focus on the latest scientific findings on innovation in education
A Global Partnership spearheaded by Chitkara University signifies the successful conclusion of the initial phase of the EDUREFORM project but also sets the base for the upcoming sustained joint initiatives and impactful advancements in education. A conference of two days marks the revolutionary journey in shaping the future of education.
