CUET 2026 admission is a multi-stage process that does not end when the exam is over. Over 16 lakh students are expected to appear this year, and most of the mistakes happen not in the exam hall but after it during university registration, preference filling, and document submission. Getting the sequence wrong costs an entire year.
CUET UG 2026 is scheduled from 11 May to 31 May 2026 in CBT mode across multiple days and shifts

Five distinct stages. Each one has its own deadlines, portals, and consequences if skipped.
This step catches most candidates off guard. Applying to CUET does not mean applying to the universities; these are two completely separate actions.
The most consequential step after the exam itself. Get this wrong and the score does not matter.
How seat allotment rounds work:
| Option After Allotment | What It Means | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Accept and Freeze | Locks current seat; exits all further rounds | Safe |
| Accept and Upgrade | Holds current seat; stays in contention for better preference next round | Low Risk |
| Reject | Forfeits current seat; tries for better option in next round | High Risk |
Different universities handle post-CUET admission differently. The broad framework is the same but the portals, timelines, and specific steps vary.

Ques. By appearing for CUET, am I automatically registered for admission to DU, BHU, etc.?
Ans. No, by appearing for CUET, a candidate is only eligible to apply for the concerned university, but after the declaration of the CUET result, the candidate must register individually for the concerned university's official admission portal, which is DU's CSAS, BHU's admission portal, JNU's portal, etc. Without registration, the candidate cannot get admission, even with a good CUET score.
Ques. How many preferences should I fill during CUET 2026 counselling?
Ans. As many as possible. There is no penalty for filling more preferences. Limiting choices to one or two colleges dramatically reduces allotment probability, especially in competitive courses like B.Com Hons., B.A. Economics Hons., and B.Sc. at top central universities. More combinations mean more opportunities across multiple rounds.
Ques. Will DU use Class 12 marks or CUET scores for preparing the merit list?
Ans. DU only considers the raw CUET UG scores uploaded by the candidates through the CSAS portal for calculating the merit list for a specific course. Class 12 board marks will not be taken into consideration for calculating merit but can be taken into consideration in some cases. The candidates need to check their CUET scores carefully before locking them on the CSAS portal.
Ques. Can I apply to a university that I did not choose in CUET 2026?
Ans. UGC has updated the CUET 2026 process. The candidates can choose domain subjects in CUET 2026 irrespective of Class 12 subjects. The candidates can choose Commerce subjects in CUET 2026 and can apply for a Science course in DU. The CSAS portal will check the eligibility for a course. The candidates need to check the subject and course combination in the brochure before locking the CUET 2026 subject combination.
