The Centre has specified that for the academic year 2024-25, you won’t need to take the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) if you’re seeking admission to colleges affiliated with central universities in Meghalaya and Nagaland. This exemption applies to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya and Nagaland University in Nagaland. This decision is a significant relief for many students in the northeast who did not take the CUET-UG exam and might have otherwise faced challenges in securing admission. 

There were multiple reports of mismanagement of the CUET exam in Meghalaya by NEHU. This led to delay in the conduct of the entrance examination leading to furore from students and parents. The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, has thanked Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan in allowing the students exemption from CUET. 

CM Conrad Sangma wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Happy to inform our students that admissions to affiliated colleges to Central Universities in Meghalaya have been exempted from CUET for the academic year. I thank @dpradhanbjp ji for his continuous support and understanding.” The Chief Minister also stated that he had personally requested exemption of colleges affiliated to NEHU from conducting admissions via CUET exam.

Key Points for Meghalaya and Nagaland Students 

• The governments of Meghalaya and Nagaland requested the central universities in the respective states to be exempted from CUET UG 2024. Their requests were communicated to the National Testing Agency (NTA). 

• The requests were subsequently granted as now the undergraduate admissions to colleges affiliated to NEHU and Nagaland University will not be based on CUET UG scores for the academic session 2024-2025.

• Admissions will now be considered based on the existing practices of these universities and not on CUET scores. 

CUET UG Assam Verdict

In Assam, CUET UG scores are not mandatory for admission to degree colleges affiliated to State Universities. Some Universities and autonomous colleges have reserved a certain quota of seats for candidates with CUET UG scores.
