EFLU — impressions from a 21st century English student
Likes
- The faculty is well trained, often passionate and with international exposure. I have had the pleasure of being taught by teachers who employed many innovative teaching methods like unique group activities, games etc. that I found quite enriching.
- The facilities such as the sports Complex, the quiet library and the green lawns.
Dislikes
- The slow and unresponsive administration is frustrating and obsolete in this day and age.
- The on campus politics can be very hard to navigate for new students.
Remarks :
Being one of the only language dedicated university in the country (India), on campus accomodation, iconic hostel windows, elegant classrooms, the beautiful Sports Complex, the university's location and affordability were some of the factors that encouraged me to choose this university. The EFL University recently began taking UG candidates from CUET, the exam for entrance into all central universities of the country. The two compulsory papers for consideration for admission were English and the General paper. The cut off for the year 2023 was around 98 percentile in English and 96 percentile on the General paper. A good background of english and a practice book from a renowned publisher like Arihant for the general paper was sufficient in my case.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course is very language heavy as opposed to being literature heavy. Along with 4 core courses, an optional foreign language is offered from first year. We have multi disciplinary courses like EVS offered from second year onwards. The faculty seem well trained in their fields, most of them passionate and often with international exposure. Some provide an extraordinary session with innovative games, activities, demonstrations, documentaries, group projects, and assigning Teaching Assistants; whereas others fail to do so as they do not bring much value to the table despite being well trained teachers. The exams are conducted in a timely fashion. Mostly being quite predictable, only sometimes do they seem a little difficult or sometimes even seem beyond our abilities.
Internships Opportunities :
Not yet. Internships begin from second year summer break onwards. One can choose to take it in their third year summer break as well. Internships are introduced early as a part of the National Education Policy.
Placement Experience :
More than 90% percent of the students who applied for various positions in different organisations were selected, ranging from foreign universities, central universities, state universities as well as private universities and publishing houses such has University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, SRM University, Chennai & Amravati and Viva Books New Delhi, respectively. Some media and communication houses that visited the campus for recruitment are Mobius, Chennai, Aptara, Tiruvanantpuram, Bellwether Digital Media Ltd., Hyderabad to name a few. Foreign language students have a great demand in multinational and software companies like Amazon, Concentrix, IBM, TATA Consultancy and Oracle. The average salary per annum was 3L and and the highest offered was perhaps 6L . As an English graduate I hope become an Editor.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Every year students in the undergraduate program are expected to pay ?2480 as tuition fee. ?5000 is charged as caution deposit, if opting for the mess, ?1500 is charged as caution deposit, if opting for hostel accomodation, ?200 as admission fee, ?100 as application fee and ?300 as development fee — for the first year only. At the start of every academic year, a fee of ?825/- for registration (first year) /re-registeration (second year and after) for hostel accomodation and and a fee of ?200 for mess membership has to be paid. Thereafter, hostel challan is ?225 monthly and mess challan can be anywhere between ?0 to ?3500 monthly depending on the student's regularity in opting to eat in the mess.
Campus Life :
The campus is always alive with literary activities due to presence of various clubs ranging from drama, music, poetry, reading and writing etc. The foreign language departments organise their own major fests in the months of February and March with decorations, ethnic food, movies and cultural activities. There are sports tournaments throughout the year ranging from Badminton, Football, Table tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket and even Ludo, Chess and Carom. Special events like festivals and ceremonies call for dance and music performances. The library usually has all the reference material mentioned in the classes which are readily available for borrowing. The classrooms have projectors for presentations and good quality chalkboards. The desk and chairs are good. "The Times of EFLU" is one the largest unofficial clubs run by the students for students to have their articles and poems and other works be published digitally in the form of an magazine, for everyone to read.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostel mess has well furnished tables and chairs that are clean. They have soap and taps, a few of which need more water pressure and are often non functional. The menu is decided by the mess secretary. It's quite diverse but mostly South indian, and the food quality can be very good to just average. Sometimes insects and hair and metal pieces may be found in the food. The hostel itself is old. Only the top three floors feel new. The rooms are usually quite adequate but the "box" rooms lack ventilation and the top most floors have to put up with intense heat in the summer and often with leakages in the monsoon. The washrooms are not good. The hostel is very affordable at ?225 per month. One has to re-register every year by filling out a form and paying the challan of ?825.

Placements and Internships The placement opportunities at my college are average, with a limited number of companies visiting the campus every year. Students who maintain a good academic record and possess strong technical and communication skills have better chances of getting placed. Generally, students with no active backlogs and a minimum academic percentage as specified by the recruiting company are eligible to participate in campus placements. A few recruiters visit the college for hiring, mainly for entry-level roles in software, IT support, and core engineering domains. However, the number of offers is limited, and only around 40–50% of students secure campus placements. The average salary package offered ranges from ?3–4 LPA, while the highest package varies depending on the company and the student's performance. The college also encourages students to apply for paid internships, which help them gain practical industry experience and improve their technical skills

I am still in my second year, so I havent sat for placements yet. But the college starts preparing us early with coding practice, projects, aptitude training, resume building sessions, and mock interviews. FRom interacting with seniors, I have heard that students who stay consistent with their skills get good opportunities

From the early semesters we are encouraged to build projects, improve our coding skills, and create a strong resume. That gives us enough time to prepare instead of rushing later. The college also shares internship opportunities and guides students through the application process. There are resume reviews, mock interviews, and career sessions that help us understand what companies expect. I feel the support is there throughout the journey, the more effort you put in, the more you can benefit from these opportunities.

From what I have experienced the college starts preparing us for placements much earlier than I expected. We regularly have coding practice, project work, resume reviews, aptitude sessions and mock interviews, so you are improving little by little instead of waiting for the final year. The college also shares internship and job opportunities with students. I feel the support is definitely there but your results depend on how much effort you put into building your skills.

As a current student I haven't reached the final placement season yet but the college has already started preparing us. We get regular updates about internship opportunities, and many students apply from the early semester itself. Along with that there are sessions on resume writing, aptitude, communication skills and interview preparation. The college also encourages us to build projects and improve our technical skills, which helps while applying for internships. I feel these small efforts throughout the course will make a big difference when placements begun.
