A pretty okay place to spend your 4 years.
Likes
- The faculty is extremely supportive and does not consist of frustrated professors that make your life feel like hell, truly grateful for that.
- I like the very pretty (albeit small) campus, that consists of an artificial lake, greenery everywhere, a KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) level cricket ground, in which state level matches are regularly held and the nice library.
Dislikes
- The crowd here is so varied that finding good company here is sometimes difficult, but this improves a lot once you're in a good club of your liking.
- The overall campus can be maintained better, almost all of the buildings are clearly showing their age, with the college being built in 1997.
- The quality of the events organized (except verve), can be a lot better. They often devolve into being fun only for the South Indian crowd and show little to no creativity.
Remarks :
I chose this college as for its beautiful and green campus, good professors and for it being present in Bangalore, which opens up employment and exposure opportunities. As it is part of the JSS family of institutions, there are quite a few cross-institution activities that help make the college experience better. Apart from this, the college has good academics and alright placements.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course curriculum is quite standard/normal as they follow VTU (Viswesvaraya Technological University) Syllubus. I chose ECE (Electronics and Communication Engineering) as I've always had a personal interest in the subject and as an indecisive person, it opens me up to a larger variety of career paths. The teachers here are quite good in their methods of teaching, most teachers request the students to not write notes, as they would be provided by the teachers themselves through their online platform/google classroom. Most teachers here are Masters/PHD holders from good universities, with a few associate professors holding only a Bachelors. Internals & Assignments are conducted as per VTU's timeline and are not very difficult to score in, although the End-Semester Examinations are probably not going to be too easy. Overall I'd say its a pretty balanced place for academics, you cant completely slack off but you also wont need to slog/work hard all the time to score 'good' marks.
Internships Opportunities :
As I'm a first year student, I am currently not eligible for any of the internship opportunities offered by the college. But even then, the college provides very limited internship assistance according to my seniors & data from the placement cell. However, If you're looking for internship experience, Bangalore provides an irrefutable advantage in terms of the sheer number of opportunities available such that with adequate work, gaining internship experience wouldn't be a behemoth task.
Placement Experience :
The eligibility criteria for placements here are a minimum of 65% in your grade 12 Boards and generally a 7CGPA is recommended to get good opportunities w.r.t the placements. In-view of the economic downturn in 2024, the number of companies visited was around 50-60, with all the prominent ones like Mercedes-Benz R&D, Bosch, Accenture, TCS and Intel present. But in 2023, there were around 120 companies taking part in the placement drive. Average Placements here are about 6-7LPA, with the highest being around 42LPA offered by Adobe. Percentage of students getting placements is about 75-80% (realistically) of the students that are eligible for placements. My plans after getting my degree in ECE, are to pursue masters at a premier institute in India or abroad.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The yearly fees for entry through COMEDK Exam in AY24-25 is 3,10,700Rs (Tuition Fees+ Miscellaneous Fees). The fee for (3-Sharing with common washroom) Hostel is currently 96,000Rs for AY24-25 Overall the fees adds up to 4,06,700 Rs at a minimum, assuming you're opting for the Hostel.
Campus Life :
Life at the JSSATEB campus is pretty alright. The crowd is a mixed bag, although it does feel like its getting better. There's one flagship fest called 'verve', which is hosted in May/June of every year. It includes various activities and is known to be the best in the vicinity. This year there's a second fest by the ECE club called "ATHARVA", it is yet to be hosted, but is likely to be pretty good. The library is of 2 floors and contains a large number of books, although except the main subject related books, the rest aren't very up-to-date. There's plenty of seating available and its often a place that is very good to study in, especially with the ease of access to the professors in the same building. Sporting events are conducted quite often, and the college teams are formed quite early on at the start of every ODD semester. The club culture at JSSATEB is just beginning to pop-off, with STEP, ATHARVA and the new under25 club beginning to gain traction.
Hostel Facilities :
I haven't myself opted for the hostel, due to the limited sharing options (only 3 sharing rooms) and sub-par hygiene/facilities, so I cannot comment on the same, but there's quite a large number of PG's in the vicinity that can help you out. Do understand that only 30% of the people on campus live in the Hostel, so its quite common for people to be living in PG's around campus. JSS is by no-means a residential college, especially with its quite small 20 acre campus. I live in a Stanza Living PG very close to the campus, and my experience here has been 'okay'. Its a lot more expensive compared to the other PG's in the vicinity and I don't think its worth the premium, but if you don't have time/ability to explore other PG's before the college year starts, its a decent option. Do note that the Hostel Fees mentioned below are for the PG and not the College Hostel.
