Nalanda Open University (NOU) started in March 1987 as a state open university set up by the Government of Bihar. It was later formed under the Nalanda Open University Act, 1995. It is the only open university in Bihar and is among the largest open universities in India. NOU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), works under the Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB), is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and received NAAC Grade B in Cycle 2 in 2021.

NOU was not listed in the NIRF 2025 rankings. The university mainly supports learners in Bihar who need open and distance education, including working students, rural learners, and students who cannot attend regular classroom courses.

The university’s new campus at Baragaon, Nalanda district, was opened on 29 August 2023. The campus covers 10 acres and was built at a cost of INR 121 crore near the ancient Nalanda University ruins. NOU also has an administrative office at Biscomaun Bhawan, Patna.

Nalanda Open University Career Outcomes

Nalanda Open University works as a distance education university, so it does not run regular campus placement drives. Students use their UGC-DEB recognised degrees to apply for jobs, competitive exams, and higher studies.

NOU degrees can be used for eligibility in Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and central or state government recruitment processes that accept UGC-approved degrees. This helps students aiming for teaching, administration, banking, defence, and civil services jobs.

Nalanda Open University Campus and Infrastructure

Nalanda Open University has its permanent campus at Baragaon, Nalanda district, Bihar. It was inaugurated on 29 August 2023. The campus is spread across 10 acres and was built for INR 121 crore. Its location near the ancient Nalanda University ruins connects it with an important historic centre of learning.

Before this campus opened, NOU worked from leased space on multiple floors at Biscomaun Bhawan, Patna. The university does not provide residential hostel facilities. Since it is a distance education university, students usually need to visit only for examinations and practical sessions, where those are required.

NOU has study centres and examination centres across Bihar, helping students take exams and receive academic support without travelling too far. In 2020, the university introduced a University Management Information System (UMIS) for digital access to academic records, fee payments, and study materials.

IGNOU has stronger national recognition, NAAC A+ accreditation, and a wider course list. NOU is stronger for students in Bihar because of its Bihar-based study centre network, courses in Bihari languages, and degree acceptance for BPSC and Bihar government recruitment. MP Bhoj Open University is also a state open university, but it mainly serves students in Madhya Pradesh. For learners in Bihar who want state government job eligibility or prefer Hindi and regional language learning, NOU is a suitable choice.
