Mahatma Gandhi University offers UG and PG courses through its teaching departments and 170 affiliated colleges. Government colleges charge lower university-approved fees, aided colleges follow a government-approved fee pattern, and self-financing colleges have higher fees under the fee regulation committee.

B.Tech is a four-year course offered by engineering colleges affiliated to MGU through the KEAM route of CEE Kerala. The popular branches include IT services-linked fields, civil, mechanical, and electronics. MBA is available at MGU School of Management and Business Studies and at affiliated business schools, so the fee and placement level changes by institution.

MGU Admission Process

MGU admissions use different routes for different courses. UG seats in affiliated colleges are filled through CAP, PG seats in university departments use MGU CAT, B.Tech uses KEAM, and MBA admissions consider accepted management entrance scores.

UG Admission (BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, BCA)

For UG courses in affiliated colleges, students apply through the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) run by MGU. Seat allotment is based on Class 12 marks, subject combination, and the college and course choices entered in the form. Kerala State Reservation Policy applies to seats in government and aided colleges.

B.Tech Admission (affiliated engineering colleges)

MGU-affiliated engineering colleges admit B.Tech students through KEAM (Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical), conducted by CEE Kerala. Students must pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The minimum aggregate is 45%, while SC/ST students need 40%. CEE Kerala conducts the centralised seat allotment.

PG Admission (MA, M.Sc, M.Com, MCA)

PG courses in MGU teaching departments are filled through the MGU Common Admission Test (CAT). PG seats in affiliated colleges are filled through CAP. Students need a relevant graduation degree with 45% marks, while SC/ST students need 40%. MA and M.Sc seats in university departments are competitive because seats are limited.

MBA Admission

For MBA admission at MGU School of Management and Business Studies and affiliated business schools, students can apply with KMAT Kerala, CAT, MAT, or CMAT scores. A graduation degree in any stream with 50% marks is required. At SMBS, selection includes the entrance score, group discussion, and personal interview.

PhD Admission

PhD applicants must have an M.Sc, MA, M.Com, MBA, or M.Tech degree with at least 55% marks. MGU conducts a research entrance test for most departments. Students with NET or JRF qualification do not have to take the entrance test. PhD admission is held in January and July sessions.

MGU Career Outcomes

Mahatma Gandhi University is an affiliating university, so it does not run one central placement cell for all students. Each affiliated college handles its own placement drives, industry links, and career support. Because the university has 170 affiliated institutions, outcomes differ from college to college.

Students from MGU-affiliated colleges move into many career areas:

• IT and Software: Engineering, BCA, and MCA graduates join IT services firms, product companies, and software development roles in Technopark Thiruvananthapuram, INFOPARK Kochi, and major metro campuses
• Civil Services and Government: Many humanities and science graduates prepare for Kerala PSC, UPSC, SSC, banking, and defence examinations
• Education: B.Ed and M.Ed graduates from affiliated Teacher Education Institutions work in Kerala government schools and private schools across the state

The MGU School of Management and Business Studies (SMBS) has its own placement programme. MBA placements at SMBS include jobs in IT, banking, FMCG, retail, and consulting. The university also promotes student entrepreneurship through its Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell network in affiliated colleges.

MGU Rankings

Mahatma Gandhi University is one of Kerala's well-ranked state universities. NIRF and NAAC recognise it for areas such as academic governance, research activity, and inclusive practices.

MGU's NIRF score details show better performance in TLR, or Teaching, Learning and Resources, at 71.20, and GO, or Governance and Outreach, at 71.68. Its RPC score, which covers research and professional practice, is 34.03. The NAAC A++ grade in the fourth cycle is important because this cycle uses a stricter and more detailed assessment method than earlier cycles.

MGU Scholarships

Students studying in MGU-affiliated colleges can apply for different government and university scholarship schemes. Eligibility depends on category, merit, family income, course, and the rules of the scheme.

Central government scholarship applications are submitted through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in. Kerala state scholarship applications are made through the e-grantz portal at egrantz.kerala.gov.in. The university scholarship cell and scholarship coordinators at each college help students with documents and application tracking.

MGU Campus and Infrastructure

Mahatma Gandhi University's main campus is located at Priyadarshini Hills, Kottayam, Kerala. The hill campus has the university administrative offices, teaching departments, central library, computer centres, and research facilities. Its setting gives students a quieter study environment away from heavy city congestion.

The central library includes books, journals, and digital databases for arts, sciences, commerce, management, law, and technology. MGU also has a digital library portal for e-resources and institutional repositories. Its research facilities include science and biotechnology laboratories, IT resources, and departmental research centres.

Outside the main campus, MGU works through 170 affiliated colleges spread across six districts of Kerala. These colleges include government colleges, aided colleges run by religious and community trusts, and self-financing private colleges. Infrastructure such as hostels, labs, and campus facilities varies by college.

Kottayam is connected by the Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi-Kottayam railway line. The nearest airports are Kochi International Airport, also called CIAL, at 90 km, and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport at 175 km.

MGU vs Calicut University vs CUSAT

Students in Kerala often compare MGU with the University of Calicut and Cochin University of Science and Technology. MGU and Calicut University are large affiliating state universities, while CUSAT is more focused on science, technology, engineering, and law with a campus-based model.

Among the three, MGU has the highest NAAC grade with A++ and the best NIRF University rank for 2025. Calicut University has the larger affiliated college network in northern Kerala. CUSAT is chosen more often by students looking for engineering and science research in Kochi, with a campus-focused structure and stronger technical research activity.
