The ISC Class 12 exam pattern for 2027 depends on the subject. English or Modern English is compulsory, and students take four or five electives. Most written papers carry 70 or 80 marks, with the remaining marks coming from practical work, project work or internal assessment.

CISCE has published the 2027 subject syllabuses. Each PDF gives the paper length, marks, sections and project or practical work for that subject.

ISC Subject Structure

ISC does not force one fixed Science, Commerce or Humanities group. Students choose from the subjects taught by their school, but university course requirements still matter. A student planning for engineering normally needs Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Commerce courses may need Accounts, Commerce, Economics or Mathematics, depending on the college.

Applied Mathematics (885) is available for Humanities, Commerce, Economics, Biosciences, Social Sciences and related fields. It cannot be taken with Mathematics.

ISC English Paper Pattern

English has two written papers: English Language and Literature in English. The 2027 Language paper covers composition, directed writing, proposal writing, grammar and comprehension. Directed writing may include a feature article, book review, blog, newspaper report or statement of purpose.

Literature in English uses the prescribed drama, short stories and poems. Internal assessment covers listening, speaking and writing tasks under the official syllabus.

Science and Mathematics Pattern

Physics, Chemistry and Biology have a 70-mark theory paper and 30 marks of practical work. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics have an 80-mark theory paper and 20 marks of project work. The two Mathematics subjects have different topic sets and cannot be chosen together.

Paper Time and Reading Time

The 2027 timetable will show the final time for every paper. In the 2026 timetable, most papers lasted three hours. Students received 15 minutes to read the paper before writing time began.
