As per the official CUET notification released, the National Testing Agency stated that it will move away from CUET Marks Normalization process. NTA planned to conduct CUET 2024 in hybrid mode on a single day. Although due to unforeseen circumstances, CUET UG exams for several centers were reconducted. CUET exams in Delhi centres on 15 May were rescheduled to May 29, and CUET exams in Silchar on May 24 were rescheduled to May 29. CUET exam at a centre in Kanpur was also rescheduled due to wrong question paper being distributed. 

Candidates are now asking questions if CUET normalization of marks that will happen due to the rescheduling may adversely affect them. NTA has reassured the student community that the normalisation process will be conducted smoothly. CUET Results 2024 is expected to release on June 30, 2024. Previously, CUET UG 2023 and CUET UG 2022 was conducted in multiple shifts and days for the same subject. The eventual CUET result was based on the normalized percentile of the test-takers. NTA applied the normalization process to adjust the difficulty level across multiple levels and shifts. 

Is Normalization of Marks Required for CUET 2024?

Due to unforeseen circumstances, CUET 2024 had to be conducted in multiple shifts. NTA, previously, wanted to do away with the CUET normalisation process. Refer below to know why normalisation of marks will be required for CUET 2024:

  • CUET 2024 exams were conducted in multiple shifts.
  • It is challenging to maintain the same level of difficulty in multiple shifts. As some shifts may get easy questions, some may get moderate, and some may be harder. 
  • To prevent confusions, NTA used the normalization of marks.
  • During admissions, universities will consider your CUET normalized marks along with the eligibility criteria set by that university.
  • NTA will release further clarifications after the release of CUET Results 2024.

The CUET exam is designed for admission to various undergraduate programs at universities across India. Given that the exams for the same subject can occur on different days and shifts, the resulting percentiles can vary significantly among student groups. Additionally, for courses such as Fine Arts or Sports, universities often allocate a certain percentage (typically 20%-25%) of the total weightage to skills assessment. This creates a challenge since raw marks cannot simply be combined with the percentile scores and the skill-based weightage to generate a final rank list. CUET Score Calculation

The CUET score calculator, also known as the NTA score calculator, is used after the normalization process to determine scores. While calculating raw marks is straightforward and follows the CUET UG 2024 marking scheme, calculating the CUET NTA score is more intricate. It involves multiple steps, various formulas, and the linear interpolation technique. Here is a simplified overview of the steps involved in calculating the CUET score:

  1. Apply the marking scheme to determine raw marks.
  2. Normalize these raw marks using specific formulas.
  3. Use the linear interpolation technique to finalize the NTA score

Converting raw scores into percentile scores for each shift involves using the following formula: P=(mN)×100P = \left( \frac{m}{N} \right) \times 100P=(Nm)×100 where:

  • PPP is the candidate's percentile score.
  • mmm represents the number of candidates with scores lower than the raw score of the candidate.
  • NNN is the total number of candidates in the shift.

For instance, let's consider three students from shift 1 (A, B, C) and three from shift 2 (D, E, F). Using this formula, we can calculate the percentiles for each student. Here’s a step-by-step illustration of how to compute these percentiles for all six students. Combine the scores and percentiles from each session into a single table. This table would include separate columns for each shift's raw scores, percentile scores, and candidate IDs, and would be arranged in descending order based on the percentiles calculated in the first step. Calculate the missing raw scores for each candidate using the linear interpolation technique. In the previous example, you'll notice that candidates E and D are missing entries in the Raw Score S1 column, while candidates A and B are missing entries in the Raw Score S2 column. This is because no other candidates scored similarly in the empty shifts. To address this, NTA uses the linear interpolation formula. Calculating the Normalized Score: For each subject, a normalized score is determined based on the percentile value in each session. This normalized score is the average of the raw scores obtained from the previous step.
