The official notification of the CAT Exam 2024 has been released in leading newspapers and on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the conducting body, IIM Calcutta. As per the official notification, the exam will be held on November 24, 2024 (Sunday) and the registration window will open on August 1 (10 AM) and close on September 13 (5 PM).

The authorities have released the CAT score normalisation guidelines on the official website at iimcat.ac.in. Since there will be multiple sessions in the exam, the authorities will follow a score normalisation process to ensure fairness.

To ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of candidates across different test sessions, the scores of candidates shall be subjected to a process of Normalisation. The normalisation process adjusts scores to account for differences in location and scale across various test forms. After this, scores are further normalised across different sections. The resulting scaled scores are then converted into percentiles for shortlisting purposes.

How is Scaled Score Calculation Done for CAT Exam 2024?

Authorities will publish the scaled scores for each section to maintain transparency in CAT Exam 2024. Scores will be published for Section 1: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Section 2: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Section 3: Quantitative Ability (QA). The total scaled score and the percentiles will be published.

Here is how the Scaled Scores will be calculated:

1. Morning Session (8:30 AM – 10:30 AM)

• Calculate the mean (M1) and standard deviation (SD1) of the raw scores in the QA section for all candidates in this session.
• Let G1 = M1 + SD1.

1. Afternoon Session (12:30 PM – 2:30 PM)

• Calculate the mean (M2) and standard deviation (SD2) of the raw scores in the QA section for all candidates in this session.
• Let G2 = M2 + SD2.

1. Evening Session (4:30 PM – 6:30 PM)

• Calculate the mean (M3) and standard deviation (SD3) of the raw scores in the QA section for all candidates in this session.
• Let G3 = M3 + SD3.

1. Overall Mean and Standard Deviation

• Calculate the mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in the QA section for all candidates across all three sessions.
• Let G = M + SD.

1. Top 0.1% Mean Raw Scores

• Calculate the mean raw score of the top 0.1% candidates in the morning session and denote it as M0.1_1.
• Calculate the mean raw score of the top 0.1% candidates in the afternoon session and denote it as M0.1_2.
• Calculate the mean raw score of the top 0.1% candidates in the evening session and denote it as M0.1_3.
• Calculate the mean raw score of the top 0.1% candidates across all sessions and denote it as M0.1.

• If you attended the morning session and your raw score in QA is R, your scaled score (S) is calculated as: S=(R−M0.11M0.1−M0.11)×SD+MS = \left(\frac{R - M0.1_1}{M0.1 - M0.1_1}\right) \times SD + MS=(M0.1−M0.11​R−M0.11​​)×SD+M
• If you attended the afternoon session and your raw score in QA is R, your scaled score (S) is calculated as: S=(R−M0.12M0.1−M0.12)×SD+MS = \left(\frac{R - M0.1_2}{M0.1 - M0.1_2}\right) \times SD + MS=(M0.1−M0.12​R−M0.12​​)×SD+M
• If you attended the evening session and your raw score in QA is R, your scaled score (S) is calculated as: S=(R−M0.13M0.1−M0.13)×SD+MS = \left(\frac{R - M0.1_3}{M0.1 - M0.1_3}\right) \times SD + MS=(M0.1−M0.13​R−M0.13​​)×SD+M

1. Round Off

• If your calculated scaled score exceeds 100, it will be rounded down to 100.

This methodology is applied to compute scaled scores for all sections (VARC, DILR, and QA).
