CAT 2022 Exam Pattern will be released along with the information brochure. All the information about marking scheme, number & type of questions, exam duration etc will be mentioned in the CAT Exam Pattern 2022. 

  • As per past year CAT Exam Patter, the question papers will be comprises a total of 66 questions. 
  • MCQs and TITA type of questions to be asked in the CAT 2022.
  • In VARC section, a total of 24 questions will be asked while in QA & DILR section, 22 & 20 questions will be asked respectively.
  • Three marks will be awarded for every correct answer whereas 1 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer. 
  • There is no negative marking for TITA questions.

As per CAT 2022 Syllabus, the highest weigthtage topics are algebra, arithmetic, geometry, para summary, parajumbles, reading comprehension.

CAT 2022 Exam Pattern

Given below is the basic format of the CAT 2022 exam that will be followed. Candidates should prepare their strategy keeping all these particulars in mind. Although the official CAT 2022 pattern is not yet released. if you refer to these above-stated guidelines, It would be really helpful for your exam.

The below-mentioned sectional display of questions is according to the previous year’s CAT 2022 papers and earlier patterns. These mentioned details are estimated by following the trends of CAT examinations.

According to the sectional display, aspirants should definitely attempt the non-MCQ. i.e., TITA questions as those questions do not carry any negative marks but if you correct them, they can surely award you with positive ones. Earlier, the number of questions were around 30 per section and the exam duration was 3 hrs.

CAT 2022 Exam Pattern: Sectional Time Limit

Students must keep in consideration the alloted time for managing the time wisely during the CAT 2022 examination. Students need to solve one section within 40 Minutes of time. Once the time limit for one section is over, the another section will appear autometically. Candidates cannot switch between the sectione by their own.Candidates are advised to go through the below table to know the alloted time for each section in CAT 2022.

Changes in CAT Exam Pattern over the years

The table below mentions how the CAT examination pattern has changed over years. The mode of examination was changed from offline to online in 2009. The major changes that happened in CAT over years are mentioned below

  • Number of Non-MCQs were 26 in 2017 and increased to 27 in 2018.
  • RC has been decreased to 4 from 5 with 4 questions from each passage.

  • History based reading comprehension is very important as it covers most of the section. 
  • The main focus should be on reading comprehension as they are a very important part of VARC syllabus. Verbal ability and reading comprehension is the section that is not that difficult to crack and is easy to moderate when it comes to the level.
  • Reading comprehension requires a strong focus on connecting the dots with the questions. 
  • Once you connect the dots between the paragraph given and the questions, you will be able to achieve the correct answer.

QA Important Topics

  • In Quantitative aptitude, the major topics that cover the section are Percentage, Time & Speed, Time & Work, and arithmetic as a whole.

Ques. Will, there be some model papers provided by the IIMs for a better understanding of the paper pattern?

Ans. Yes, model papers and practice papers will be provided on the official CAT website during October. You can go through the papers and try to solve them as per your strategy.

Ques. Can I attempt the questions according to my preference or is there any specific order

Ans. You can answer the questions according to your preference but you can’t switch between sections before the allotted time for the particular section gets over i.e. 40 Minutes. There is a specific order for attempting the paper. You are free to choose whichever question you want to answer within the opened section but cannot change the section before time.

Ques. When will be official CAT 2022 exam pattern released?

The CAT 2022 registrations will start from the first week of August and the official notice containing the CAT 2022 exam pattern will be released on the official CAT website by the end of July.

Ques. What is the difficulty level of the overall exam?

The exam’s difficulty level varies from moderate to difficult but if you are well prepared then it would not be much difficult for you.

Ques. How many questions should I get correct to get a good score?

Ans. Approximately 10-12 questions per section will fetch you a good score. It would be great if you could do more than this. Try to skip those questions in the beginning, that you don’t know and keep them for the end as it is better to leave the question than mark any wrong option as marking wrong would deduct one mark of yours.

Ans: The candidate will take the exam on a workstation assigned at the test center. No candidate can take the exam on their laptop or computer system.

Ans: Yes, all the questions carry equal marks.

Ques: What are TITA-type questions?

Ans: Type in the Answer (TITA) type questions also referred to as non-MCQ type questions are those questions in which no options or choices are provided. Candidates have to go through the questions and solve them to type the answer in the text box provided. 25-30% of the questions asked in the paper are non-MCQ-type questions.
