Yes the IIM’S consider 12th Marks in Selecting candidates to their MBA programs. The marks of 12th standard go with the weightage offered by IIM and year wise, but here are some illustrations:

IIM Bangalore: In 2023, weightage given to 12th marks was 10%.

IIM Calcutta: Candidates receive marks for their 10th and 12th marks, but the admission authority does not consider these scores after the PIround.

FMS Delhi: The selection process for the institute includes 12th marks, CAT score, 10th marks, statement of purpose, extempore and personal interview.

Other factors that IIMs consider are CAT score, Graduation score, Work experience, and Gender diversity.

IIM Admission Process 2025-27: Selection Parameters

CAT 2023 IIM admission process can be divided into the following stage:

Stage 1: Shortlisting of Candidates based on CAT scores

  • Candidates have to apply by visiting the official websites of IIMs to become eligible for the admission process.
  • Candidates who are qualifying for the CAT cut off decided by the institute will become eligible for stage 2 of the admission process.

Stage 2: Shortlisting of Candidates for WAT/GD-PI

  • Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their CAT score and academic record.
  • WAT-GD-PI round is conducted based on which candidates will be judged and awarded marks for the final selection process.

Stage 3: Calculation of Composite Score

  • The composite score of each candidate is calculated based on various parameters.
  • Based on the composite scores the final selection list will be prepared.

The factors considered by IIMs for GD-WAT-PI are different for every IIM as they have their own specific weightage assigned to these parameters.

CAT Score The overall percentile score obtained by the candidate in the CAT exam. A key factor in shortlisting candidates for WAT/GD-PI rounds.
Graduation Score The aggregate percentage secured in a three-year degree course or its equivalent (e.g., B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., etc.). This score contributes to the final selection process.
Class 12 Score The aggregate percentage obtained in Class 12 or its equivalent examination. This is an important criterion for shortlisting, especially for IIMs like Calcutta and Indore.
Class 10 Score The aggregate percentage obtained in Class 10 or its equivalent exam. This score is considered for shortlisting in IIMs like Kozhikode and Indore.
WAT/GD-PI Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI) are the final rounds of selection. Performance in these rounds contributes to the final score.
Academic Diversity Extra points awarded to candidates from non-engineering backgrounds to ensure diversity in the student body. The weight of academic diversity varies across campuses.
Gender Diversity Female/transgender candidates are given extra points to promote gender diversity and fair representation. The points for gender diversity differ from campus to campus.
Work Experience Points awarded for prior work experience (ranging from 1 to 5). Work experience adds value to the application, with a specific weight for each IIM. Points for work experience vary per campus.

IIM Shortlisting Criteria for PI (2025-27)

Which is the easiest IIM to Get Into?

While no IIM is considered easy to get into, some IIMs may have relatively lower cutoffs and less stringent criteria compared to others.

Here's a breakdown of some IIMs that could be easier to get into, along with key points to consider for your IIM admission strategy.

IIM Calcutta

Less emphasis on graduation scores: Though IIM Calcutta is one of the top IIMs, it does not demand an outstanding graduation score to reach the WAT-PI round.

Even candidates with less than 70% in graduation have been successfully admitted.

IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Ranchi, IIM Shillong, IIM Kashipur, IIM Sambalpur: Newer IIMs

Normally, their cut-offs are much less stringent compared to that of older IIMs.

Such IIMs will surely be an advantageous opportunity for aspirants seeking the quality education of an IIM, albeit with a small compromise.

IIM Bangalore

Highly competitive: IIM Bangalore is one of the toughest IIMs to get into, mainly because of its rigorous admission process.

It gives high weightage to a candidate's academic record and also values work experience.

Takeaway: Top CAT score and good academic background are essential to stand out.

No Management Quota: Unlike some private institutions, IIMs do not offer admission through a management quota. Admission is strictly based on merit, primarily determined by your CAT score and overall profile.
