MBA Admission to IITs Through CAT

CAT is a route to MBA admission at participating IIT management schools, but there is no single IIT MBA cutoff or common IIT MBA counselling form. The degree requirement, CAT screening, profile score and interview process belong to the individual programme.

For CAT 2026 applicants, the completed 2026–28 admission rules below are historical comparisons. They are not confirmed 2027–29 cutoff numbers.

IIT MBA Eligibility: Degree and Marks

IIT Bombay’s 2026–28 MBA accepted a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, not only engineering. Final-year students could apply using their latest available aggregate, subject to completing the admission requirements. A three-year bachelor’s degree and a four-year engineering degree should not be treated as different entrance routes unless the particular programme says so.

IIT Madras listed graduates in any discipline with first class or the required percentage. Its CAT exemption applied to IIT graduates with a CGPA of at least 8.0 on a 10-point scale. That was an institute-specific exemption, not a waiver for every IIT MBA programme or every graduate.

At IIT Kharagpur, the 2026–28 MBA routes were a minimum four-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology or pharmacy, or a master’s in Science, Economics or Commerce with Mathematics/Statistics at bachelor’s level. A general three-year bachelor’s degree alone was not the listed route.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad accepted any-discipline graduates for its MBA, but its MBA in Business Analytics required a BE/BTech. The shared institute name did not make the two programmes’ degree conditions identical.

The minimum degree percentage is not a CAT percentile cutoff. A student can meet CAT eligibility and still fall below an IIT programme’s higher academic minimum.

IIT MBA Cutoff: What Should You Compare?

Use three separate comparisons: degree eligibility, CAT requirements, and the shortlist formula. A published minimum CAT percentile is only one possible screening condition; some institutes shortlist with a composite of CAT performance and academic/profile factors.

These are application/screening minimums for the previous intake, not CAT 2026 predictions or guaranteed interview scores. Kharagpur combined the CAT scaled-score component with an application rating; it did not rank eligible applicants only by the displayed percentile floor.

A “safe percentile” quoted without an intake, category and source is not an official IIT cutoff. The CAT cutoff comparison includes current institute-specific examples of how sectional and overall requirements differ.

Shortlisting and Final Selection

IIT Bombay’s 2026–28 admission criteria used CAT 2025, academic profile and work experience for shortlisting. Final selection also included the personal interview. Its separately accessible weightage page describes March 2025 interviews using CAT 2024; those weights must not be labelled as CAT 2026 rules.

IIT Madras described a shortlist composite using CAT aptitude, past academics, work experience and diversity. Final evaluation included the composite score, reflective writing, interview and achievements. A CAT score therefore starts the evaluation rather than settling the entire admission decision.

For Dhanbad’s 2026 admission, final selection assigned 40% to the interview, 35% to CAT percentile, 10% each to academics and industrial experience, and 5% to female candidates. Roorkee used CAT, interview and work experience; JEE/JEE Advanced-qualified IIT graduates with CGPA at least 7 had a separate CAT-exempt interview route in that intake.

For a student comparing institutes, the practical question is which parts of the profile each school evaluates. Keep board marks, degree results and employment dates available before filling the separate forms; do not use one school’s weightages to estimate another school’s offer.

Separate Applications and Interview Documents

Submit the management school’s own MBA application when its window opens. CAT registration alone does not complete that form. The completed IIT Madras 2026 intake accepted online applications through 31 January 2026; that date is historical and is not a deadline for CAT 2026 candidates.

Sponsored, international and regular domestic routes can differ. For example, IIT Madras described a separate sponsored route with employer conditions and a separate international/NRI route using GMAT. These should not be merged into the domestic CAT instructions.
