GD, PI and WAT After CAT 2026

GD means Group Discussion, PI means Personal Interview, and WAT is a Writing Ability Test. Ahmedabad uses the name Analytical Writing Test, or AWT. These are institute-level admission stages, not extra sections of the CAT paper.

The IIM Ahmedabad selection process uses a composite built from CAT and application-rating information before the writing test and interview. Its forty-percent final component is that normalised composite, not CAT marks alone. Calcutta uses a different final formula.

Prepare for the rounds named in your programme call. If a business school specifies GD, practise a group discussion; if it specifies WAT and PI, devote that practice time to writing and answering follow-up questions.

Personal Interview Questions to Practise

Practice questions: use your own academic and work history to answer these prompts. They are not transcripts from a past IIM interview.

For a fresher, choose two subjects from your degree and one project. For each subject, explain a central concept, solve a basic example and connect it to an actual application. For the project, separate the team objective from the part you completed yourself.

For a working applicant, prepare one process from end to end: what starts it, who uses its output, where delays or errors arise, and what you changed. Describe confidential work without sharing client names, personal records or internal figures that you are not authorised to disclose.

A career gap needs a clear timeline. Explain what occupied the period and what you actually completed. An unfinished course should stay an unfinished course; a few months of exam preparation should not become invented consulting or employment.

How to Answer Why MBA and Tell Me About Yourself

Build the introduction around a recent experience that explains your next step. A list of marks, school names and personality adjectives leaves little to discuss. This fictional commerce-student answer shows a different approach:

I am completing a commerce degree, and my final-year project examines why a small retailer can report a profit but still face a cash shortage. I traced the gap to inventory purchases and the timing of customer payments. That made me interested in working-capital decisions. I want to study finance and operations together so I can move from recording those decisions to evaluating them.

The answer creates three follow-ups: Why can profit and cash differ? What did the student personally analyse? Why are both finance and operations relevant? Prepare those explanations before polishing the opening sentence.

For Why MBA?, connect experience, target responsibility and learning need. For example, an engineer interested in product management could explain a real trade-off between a technical feature, development effort and a customer problem. Naming a specialisation without explaining that trade-off is a weaker answer.

When discussing a setback, keep the cause short and the correction concrete. Instead of saying that you became more disciplined, describe the change in your study or work method and the evidence that followed. Do not invent a dramatic success to make an ordinary improvement sound impressive.

If a follow-up exposes a gap, state the part you know and the part you cannot establish. You can ask to work through an unfamiliar calculation, but presenting a guess as a remembered fact makes the rest of the answer harder to trust.

Group Discussion Practice with a Worked Case

Practice case: a small company can fund either a hiring drive or training for its existing team. Which should it choose? This is an original discussion exercise, not a predicted GD topic.

Start by defining the decision. Is the company short of people, or do its current employees lack a particular skill? Training cannot immediately fill an empty role, while extra hiring may repeat an existing skills problem.

Enter with a new reason, a correction or a comparison. Repeating the previous speaker in different words does not advance the decision. If the discussion splits into two camps, identify the assumption behind each camp before proposing a compromise.

In the closing summary, report what the group established, where it disagreed and the condition still unresolved. A summary should not introduce a fresh argument that nobody has had a chance to discuss.

Prepare a Written Argument Alongside Your PI Answers

An interview answer can develop through follow-up questions. A WAT response needs to make its reasoning understandable on the page. Use the company-training case to practise the difference.

1. State whether training or hiring addresses the main problem.
2. Explain one operational benefit and one cost of that choice.
3. Give the strongest reason for choosing the other option.
4. End with the condition that decides between them.

Write the answer once, then read only the first sentence of each paragraph. Those sentences should form a recognisable argument. If they all say training is useful, the essay is repeating a view rather than developing it.

For the actual writing test, follow the time and word limits stated in the task instructions.

Interview Calls, Dates and Documents

CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November 2026. The result is tentatively due in the first week of January 2027. Ahmedabad plans its AWT/PI shortlist tentatively for the second week of January; individual call letters give the appointment details.

Ahmedabad lists Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi as AWT/PI cities. Applicants select two city preferences in the CAT form. These are interview cities, not the CAT examination-centre list.

In the IIM Calcutta admission criteria, work points use completed months up to 31 January 2027 and count only work after the bachelor's degree. Internships, apprenticeships, articleship, training, curricular work and unpaid work are excluded from that score. An internship can still be discussed honestly as an experience; it should not be reported as qualifying full-time work.
