A housing association invited residents to plant rooftop gardens. Volunteers later reported lower indoor afternoon temperatures than before. The report described the gardens as promising, but did not conclude that they alone caused the change. The volunteers could have differed from other residents in roof insulation, ventilation or use of fans. Weather also varied between the two measurement periods. The association proposed comparing otherwise similar homes over the same period, with gardens assigned by lottery to some of them. It did not measure electricity consumption. The aim of a better comparison was not to dismiss the volunteers' experience, but to find out how much of the change could reasonably be attributed to the gardens.
