CAT Data Interpretation Topics

Data Interpretation asks you to work with quantities in tables, graphs or written information. The format is only the starting point: a table can require logical deduction before any arithmetic is possible.

Check the unit and denominator before calculating. A chart showing percentage growth is not a chart of total sales. A tariff amount divided by a tariff rate gives the relevant import value, not automatically the exporting country's total trade.

Missing-data sets need both arithmetic and restrictions. If a total is known but several entries are missing, one equation may not determine each entry. Additional clues or the question itself may narrow what needs to be found.

CAT Logical Reasoning Topics

Logical Reasoning sets place several conditions on the same situation. Build one model that satisfies all of them. A diagram that fits the first two clues but breaks a later condition is not a partial answer; it is an invalid case.

For circular arrangements, decide how positions and directions are defined before placing people. If the set includes movement, keep separate states after each turn rather than overwriting the starting arrangement.

For rankings or cumulative scores, separate the score earned in one round from the running total. Tie-break rules can change who moves to the next group even when cumulative scores are equal. The CAT DILR preparation guide focuses on representing and selecting such sets.

How Hybrid DILR Sets Work

DI and LR are not two sealed halves of the section. A transport set can combine capacity percentages, ticket totals and route restrictions. A score table can combine arithmetic totals with ranking and transfer rules.

Distinguish three types of result: a value fixed by every valid arrangement, a value that is possible in at least one arrangement, and a value that depends on an extra condition in the question. A question asking what is necessarily true needs the first, not merely one convenient arrangement.

A useful model keeps confirmed information separate from trial cases. If a clue leaves two possible placements, write both branches or represent the uncertainty; silently choosing one may produce several confident but wrong answers.

These are set-level reasoning skills. Completing isolated coding-decoding or blood-relation exercises does not establish that a multi-condition CAT caselet is covered. Use CAT DILR papers to see the size and interaction of actual sets.

CAT 2025 DILR Set Distribution

The 2025 Slot 1 DILR paper contained five sets and 22 questions. The question ranges make clear why a set count and a question count are not interchangeable.

This paper had three four-question sets and two five-question sets. It does not establish that CAT 2026 will use the same topics or set sizes. The current official instructions do not give a fixed chapter or DI-versus-LR quota.

Nor does the chart type alone establish difficulty. A long-looking table can have direct calculations, while a short paragraph can have many linked cases. The source of difficulty needs to be judged from its conditions rather than a label such as arrangements or graphs.

DILR Time Limit and Marking Scheme

DILR is the second section, after VARC and before QA. Its standard time limit is 40 minutes. Time cannot be borrowed from the preceding section or saved for the following section.

The 2025 DILR section had a maximum of 66 raw marks from 22 questions. A wrong MCQ lost 1 mark, whereas an incorrect typed answer had no penalty. The current 2026 FAQ retains the marking rules but does not disclose the non-MCQ count.

Worked DILR Example: Route Capacity

Original example: a 50-seat bus travels A-B-C. There are 20 passengers from A to C, 15 from A to B and 10 from B to C. A passenger travelling A-C occupies a seat on both segments.

Adding the segment occupancies gives 65, but that is not the number of distinct passengers: the 20 A-C passengers are counted twice. This distinction is central to route and capacity sets.

Before timing a set, check whether you can explain what each row and total represents. During review, identify whether a wrong answer came from a missed condition, a wrong denominator, a duplicated count or an arithmetic slip. Those errors require different fixes; merely rereading the final answer does not identify them.
