CAT 2026 Rules That Shape Preparation

CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November. Preparation must reflect three separately timed sections, not a freely divided two-hour paper.

PwBD candidates receive 40 minutes of additional time, divided equally across sections, giving a total of 160 minutes. The CAT exam pattern explains the timing and response rules.

The 2025 paper had 24 VARC, 22 DILR and 22 QA questions. Use those papers for practice, but keep that count attached to 2025: CAT has not published fixed 2026 question counts or chapter quotas.

Find the Gap Before Choosing More Material

Begin with a mixed attempt, then revisit the same work without a timer. The comparison reveals whether the difficulty is understanding, execution or selection. A total score alone cannot tell you which one needs work.

Keep the diagnosis specific. "Weak in maths" is too broad to guide a session. "Uses selling price as the profit base" identifies a repairable error. Likewise, a DILR grid that ignores a negative condition needs modelling practice, not another speed-calculation sheet.

The CAT syllabus helps locate the topic behind an error. Add material when a gap requires it; restarting with several new books can repeat already-mastered work.

Prepare Each Section Differently

VARC needs evidence-based reading; DILR needs reliable representations; QA needs the correct mathematical relationship. Use different review notes for each.

In VARC preparation, explain the difference between the chosen option and the passage. In DILR preparation, identify the first clue that reduces the possible cases. In QA preparation, change one condition after solving to test whether the method still holds.

Mix familiar and unfamiliar contexts. Recognising a chapter name is easier than choosing the method when the paper does not supply that label.

A Flexible Weekly CAT Study Plan

The sample below uses six study sessions. Their length depends on your available time; the sequence matters more than equal hours. Keep the full mock uninterrupted when simulating the standard 120-minute exam, and reserve separate time for its review.

If you work or attend college, split concept repair and review into shorter sessions, but keep periodic timed section attempts intact. If one section has a clear knowledge gap, give it an additional repair session without dropping the other two completely.

When starting late, use the first diagnostic to choose what can realistically improve before the test. A short plan should still include all three sections, mixed practice and review; it cannot promise a particular percentile from a fixed number of days.

Use Mock Analysis to Change the Next Attempt

Illustrative CAT marking: 12 correct answers, 4 wrong MCQs and 2 wrong typed answers produce 12 x 3 - 4 = 32 raw marks. The typed errors do not attract a penalty. This calculation is not a percentile conversion.

Review slow correct answers as well. A correct answer that used a large part of the section may expose a shorter method or a poor initial choice. Reattempt skipped questions before reading solutions to distinguish lack of time from lack of knowledge.

Use the CAT mock-test guide for the distinction between interface practice, short drills and full-length mocks. A private mock percentile depends on that mock's participant group and is not the official CAT result.

Preparation in the Final Weeks

The official CAT mock link is scheduled for 12 November 2026. Its interface practice is useful for navigation, selecting responses and typing answers. The official FAQ says mock questions are illustrative, not a prediction of the final test.

For revision, use the errors you can name precisely: an unsupported RC inference, a DILR condition missed, a QA domain restriction forgotten. Repeating a short error list with fresh questions is more targeted than rereading every solved page.
